Companion Beds Series

When a person has special medical needs, it involves not only that person herself or himself, but also close relatives, especially ones life companion. Except when the patient needs round-the-clock expert professional attention, the closest friend or family member, often the spouse, is usually the primary care giver.

Transfer Master Products, Inc. recognized the need for the companion of a patient to remain close, for relational and emotional reasons as well as availability for care, and they designed the Companion Beds for this reason. Most of the Transfer Master patient care beds can be paired to one of their Companion Beds. For instance, the company says the Companion HD is "The Perfect Complement for a Hospital Bed." Among their features, all five Companion Bed models have wired remotes, but are ECU* compatible. *Electronic Control Unit, making wired remotes wirelessly accessible

Transfer Master lists five Companion Bed models on their website. Each one can be paired with one or more of the TM beds:

New Companion with Night Rider and New Valiant
Companion HD with Valiant HD
Companion SHD with Valiant SHD
Hospital Grade Companion HD with Valiant HD and Hospital Grade Valiant HD
Hospital Grade Companion SHD with Valiant SHD and Hospital Grade Valiant SHD

With a lifting capacity of 300 lbs, New Companion is the lightest of the Transfer Master Companion Beds. It is listed under Adjustable Beds, those designed for home use, and it is the only Companion Bed not listed under Bariatric Beds. It is also the lowest model. The deck of the New Companion in the Flat position is 12" from the floor, while just under 13½" is the height of the others. This height is fixed, but that of the hi-low bed it is paired with is variable. In sizes like Full and Queen the New Companion is a separate bed, while Twin sizes can be linked for Dual King beds (80" or 84" long). Since their appearance is similar, the paired beds are pieces of a set, not with one bed looking out-of-place.

The Companion HD is designed to be paired with hospital beds. It is listed in all three of Transfer Master's bed categories. Like the TM hospital beds, the deck is about 13½" off the floor. It has a 600-lb weight capacity, so it can be used with the lighter beds (though not linked with them) if the companion using it is that much heavier than the patient, though the appearance might not be an exact match. This bed has a reinforced frame.

Also listed in all three Transfer Master bed categories is Companion SHD, called the "Companion Bed for Larger Users." This model has the heaviest frame and heaviest motors to facilitate its 750-lb lifting capacity.

The Hospital Grade Companion HD and Hospital Grade Companion SHD are engineered to meet hospital specifications. They are specifically designed to be paired with beds used in hospitals, though they can be used with non-hospital grade models if the companion of the patient wishes or needs to avail use of the hospital features, making it an option if both partners are patients under home health care.

The control boxes for all Companion Beds except New Companion are modular in design. Split beds can be set up without the use of tools. They have separate controls, so one side can stay in place while the other is being adjusted.

Transfer Master Products supplies mattresses for each of these Companion Bed models, and they are included in the suggested manufacturer's retail price. There are six mattress models to choose from, four PressureGuard airbed models, the Ascent I laminated foam mattress, and the Soft Touch memory foam mattress.

Transfer Master Companion Beds are covered by a warranty that "protects against defects in material or workmanship for one year from the date of purchase by the original consumer." They are available directly from Transfer Master or through healthcare products dealers.
