Novosbed

Novosbed can be loosely translated "new bed." In 2007, selling a luxury mattress only online and at affordable prices was a relatively new idea. Twin brothers and their sister, Sam, Andy, and Helenka Prochazka, had decided to do something new in making and selling mattresses. Here is their account:

In 2009, the mattress industry turned 109 years old. Over those 109 years it had become bloated, stagnant, and utterly complacent. But it had also become a $25 billion behemoth dominated by 2 companies that had not innovated in decades: Tempur-Sealy and Serta Simmons. Since the beginning they have relied on sales gimmickry, trickery, pseudoscience, and an army of salespeople to confuse people and sell their products at outrageous prices.

Buying a mattress had become one of the most confusing, time consuming, and frustrating experiences.

In 2009, they began selling a specialty sleep (non-coil) mattress, Novosbed, online. It is described as "totally risk-free" with a 120-night trial period. This is compressed, rolled and fitted into a box for shipping at no additional cost.

This three-layer memory foam mattress comes in three firmnesses, determined by the relative thicknesses of the layers, with all models being 11" high. Also, the firmness can be adjusted with an internal topper which can be added. An adjustment band can be zipped on to make the cover fit. This contrasts with several other online-only mattresses which have only one model each, available in only one firmness level.

Novosbed is based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is in a business innovation center located in a former Hudson Bay Company department store building, a floor above where the mattress department had been.

Novosbed mattresses were originally made in China, but now they are produced in Pennsylvania in the United States. Quality was a major concern.

Instead of dumping returned beds in a landfill, Novosbed donates them to charities, especially those who house the homeless. Now major mattress companies have begun to follow suit.

On its website, Novosbed compares its mattress with those by Tempur-Pedic®, online high-end brands (Loom & Leaf®, etc.), and online economy brands (Casper®, etc.).

Novosbed sells its own foundation, a slatted wood base. It is shipped as a kit which can be assembled on site and the cover zipped over it.

Bucking the trend toward 10-year warranties, the Novosbed warranty is for 15 years.
