ComfortAire DreamAire Cirrus Adjustable Airbed

The 9 inch thick Cirrus from ComfortAire is the entry level bed with adjustable air support. There are several departures from traditional mattresses when you move to an air bed. Typically, the covers will change, the overall construction will change, the materials used to manufacture the bed will change, and the feel will change. Since air beds can change firmness at the push of a button, we will be examining the beds as if fully inflated. The Cirrus model features a tightly quilted cover with a soft convoluted foam pad for initial comfort. With so little foam above a fully inflated core, the bed would have an ultra firm feel. The next area of the bed is the air core, which uses a latex rubber bladder with a cotton shell. This is one of the cheapest designs, but is still considered durable enough for use in a bed. Around the air core is a foam support system. This is an important feature as it will permanently locate the air cores in the proper place.

A specific feature of airbeds is the ability to tailor the support you need. This provides a concern for queen size and larger mattresses since typically more than one person will use the bed. As a result, you can purchase a queen or full sizes of the Cirrus with either one or two air chambers (one for each side). King sizes will always use two chambers, and twins will only have one. A queen Cirrus with two individual air chambers will have a starting price around $1150.00, based on the manufacturers suggest retail price (MSRP). The single core design will only run about $25.00 less. Even when not needed, we would recommend the dual core design for added flexibility in the future.

One of the larger concerns that we hear about is that when you lie on an air bed with multiple cores, you may feel the border between the two cores as a stiff area in the bed. When the air cores are fully inflated, the difference between the air cores and the foam borders should be negligible. If you like to sleep on a softer bed, you are likely to feel the difference if you roll close to the edge or across the center of the bed.

The warranty period offered by ComfortAire on the DreamAire series of beds is up to 1 year for the cover (which is zipper-removable), and 20 years on the bed itself. The first 3 years of the warranty are fully covered, and starting in year 4 you would pay 20% of the purchase price as a base plus 4% of the purchase price per year from date of purchase. This translates into a 36% responsibility in year 4, 40% in year 5, 44% in year 6 and so on.
