European Sleep Works calls the Alpine HDM, "A modern take on our Alpine Classic." Essentially it is the Alpine Classic with the addition of High Definition Microcoils (HDM), and the latex is divided between two layers. It has the same cover composition and the same support core.
As in the Alpine Classic, the support core of the Alpine HDM consists of 1,200 English-made compressed pocket coils. Precompression is used to give these base coils a softer initial response without loss of support.
Instead of one 2" layer of Talalay latex, as in the Alpine Classic, the Alpine HDM divides the 2" thickness into two layers. The thinner layer, about ¾" high, separates the micro-coils from the base coils. The thicker latex layer (about 1¼") sits atop the microcoils. Latex is highly resilient, making the support and cushioning springy. This is in contrast to sinking into memory foam. Latex, especially Talalay, is more breathable than memory foam, and does not build up heat. It is also anti-microbial and hypoallergenic (although some people maintain that some allergenic proteins may remain after processing and rinsing).
Above the base coils and between the two latex sheets is a sheet of High Definition Microcoils. The designed effect of these tiny coils is twofold: to make the support more lively, and to make the mattress more airy. These independently responding coils so high in the mattress also provide additional pressure relief.
Like Berkeley Ergonomics, European Sleepworks distinguishes clearly between minicoils and microcoils, with the former being higher. The illustrations used by both companies show the diameter of microcoils as greater than their height, while their minicoils are higher than wide. This sounds like an easily defined definition of the two categories. Standardizing this distinction among manufacturers would make the use of this terminology less confusing.
The foam and the cover materials in the Alpine HDM are natural. The latex is 100% from rubber tree sap. And the cover materials are organic cotton and Merino wool. The cotton is in a stretch knit fabric. With cotton backing, it is quilted to the wool. Compressed Merino wool is naturally flame resistant, meaning no chemicals are needed.
The Flexible Slat System is the preferred foundation for the Alpine HDM. These slats can be adjusted in places to be firmer or less firm. This innerspring mattress will also work with a fixed slat base, a platform bed or box base, and an adjustable bed (adjustable slatted frames are available). Old-style box springs are not recommended.
The Alpine HDM is covered by a 10-year warranty from European Sleep Works.
