King Koil Natural Response Brand

King Koil has been designing and manufacturing Natural Response mattresses for several years. At the time of this writing, King Koil is in the midst of revising this line, and the "Brand" page on their site marks the Natural Response page as "coming soon."

The name "Natural Response" refers to the use of natural latex in these mattresses. Natural latex is made from the sap of the Amazon Rubber Tree (Heava brasiliensis), native to the Amazon basin of Brazil, but now extensively cultivated in Southeast Asia (Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia). King Koil Malaysia list three benefits of the use of natural latex in mattresses: it has better weight distribution, promotes proper spinal alignment, and is anti-microbial. The latex foam King Koil uses in its US-made mattresses is manufactured in the United States by Latex International.

The resiliency of natural latex makes it more durable than most other foams used in mattresses, such as polyurethane and visco-elastic memory foam. Large-cell formation allows it to give and conform without "bottoming out." This leads the King Koil Natural Response mattress to distribute the weight of users more evenly, which is what also helps sleepers to maintain correct alignment of the spine whether lying on one's side or back.

Natural latex is also anti-microbial, which means that it resists the growth of bacteria, fungus and dust mites. Besides being more healthful, this also means that Natural Response mattresses should naturally stay fresh and odor-free longer.

Latex International makes Nuform, a latex foam which is specially constructed to allow more air to pass through it for ventilation. King Koil uses Nuform which has been infused with textile phase-change materials (PCMs). The textile PCMs were developed by NASA for use in spacesuits to control temperatures. Microencapsulated PCMs absorb heat and melt when the temperature rises above a certain level. Then when the temperature drops below a set point, the PCMs crystalize, releasing heat previously absorbed. This provides for "temperature neutrality," keeping the temperature of the sleeping surface within a range of 82̊ to 86̊ F so the sleeper is neither too hot nor too cool.

Natural Response mattresses by King Koil begin at the bottom with a zoned layer of thick, dense, support latex. The density varies by zone, five zones to configure the support to the shape of sleepers' bodies.

Then there are two layers of coils. The larger coils provide the basic support, and the smaller ones in the next layer moderate this support, making it more responsive to the weight and shape of the sleepers' bodies while limiting the transfer of one sleeper's motion to the other. This minimizes sleep disturbance. These coils are also arranged in zones corresponding to major body sections, so that the users have more support where it is needed, which helps relieve pressure points.

The innersprings are topped by a layer of very soft latex foam, then one of firmer latex. This way the user does not feel the springs themselves. The ability of latex to stretch and return to form not only makes it more durable, it makes it more supportive. This elastic support should promote better circulation as well as ease of breathing, which would help the user to sleep more restfully.

Then there is the layer of Nuform, described above, which combines support and conformability with temperature moderation. On top of the Nuform is the pillow-form, made of specially constructed latex pillows stretched out and attached to each other as a layer. This futher inhibits motion transfer, making for a more tranquil sleeping experience, even if one sleeper moves around or gets in and out of bed.

Just under the cover is a memory foam layer, called "Visco Supreme," to cradle a sleeper's body in supportive comformity.

The sleeping surface of the King Koil Natural Response mattress features tufted quilting. The cover fabric is quilted to a long-lasting, tear-resistant foam called "Everquilt." The quilting makes the cover more durable. The tufting is to resist lasting body impressions. And esthetically, tufted quilting gives the mattress a high class appearance and feel.
