Natural Therapy Collection

The Natural Therapy Collection is billed by Sleep Therapy as, "Sleep in the arms of nature - the finest sleep environment. It provides pressure relieving and resilient, long-lasting comfort. It is produced using environmentally friendly materials and processes." Notably missing from the components of the mattresses in this collection are memory foam and polyurethane foam, as well as synthetic fibers such as rayon, nylon and polyester. The materials which are used are natural cotton in the cover, natural wool in the quilting, natural latex in the upholstery (padding), and "re-engineered steel" in the coils.

According to industry news sources, these "green" innerspring mattresses are in demand in Asian countries, such as Japan, South Korea and China, largely because of the certification of materials and processes and the higher quality standards of American-made products.

As are other Sleep Therapy products, the Natural Therapy models are No-Turn (no-flip) mattresses. According to Mike Malkiewicz, while his family owned and ran Sleep Therapy, customers told him that mattresses were too heavy and bulky to turn over. So in 1980 Sleep Therapy began designing and selling one-sided No-Turn mattresses, and the mattress industry followed suit. The majority of mattresses now are one-sided.

Another significant feature of Natural Therapy mattresses is the vertically-vented latex foam. Sleep Therapy is also a pioneer in the use of vertically-ventilated foams to cool the mattress. Besides cooling, this also allows moisture to dissipate and not accumulate in the interior of the mattress.

The four models in the Natural Therapy Collection are simply named Natural Therapy I, Natural Therapy II, Natural Therapy III, and Natural Therapy IV. This closeness of the names is a natural, since the list of materials and the order of use are the same for each model. The basic diffeences are in the amount or number of layers in each model of two materials, wool and latex.

Organic-Cotton-Cover WoolLatex-Foam

The cover and border of each Natural Therapy mattress is made of 100% natural (organic) cotton. The advantages of cotton are its breathablility and it smoothness. Being natural means that nothing is added to the cotton. And since the cotton Sleep Therapy uses is organic, there are no residual pesticides and fungicides.

Natural wool batting is used for the quilting in Natural Sleep mattresses. Natural Therapy I and Natural Therapy II each have one layer, while Natural Therapy III and Natural Therapy IV have two. The wool, used for cushioning, is temperature neutral and breathable. It also wicks moisture, keeping the top of the mattress dry. Compressed wool also is flame resistant, eliminating the need for chemical fire retardants.

Between the quilting and the innerspring is natural latex foam. Made from the sap of the rubber tree, latex is naturally resistant to bacteria, molds and dust mites. Since the foam is washed after curing, removing allergy-triggering proteins, it is also hypoallergenic. The foam is vertically ventilated (see above). Natural Therapy I has one layer of latex, Natural Therapy II and Natural Therapy III have two, and Natural Therapy IV has three.

The innerspring of Natural Therapy mattresses has pocket coils made from "re-engineered steel." The coil count is not listed, nor is the height of the coils.

Sleep Therapy supplies a wood-frame foundation for its Natural Therapy Collection models. With a firm-yet-resilient flat surface, this provides the sure support needed by pocket coil mattresses. Natural Therapy mattresses would also be compatible with platform beds, European wood slats, and adjustable beds.

Mattresses in the Natural Therapy Collection carry Sleep Therapy's 10-year non-prorated warranty. In the United States, they are available in Southern California and adjacent areas.
