Craftmatic Model I

The Model I by Craftmatic is basically the current extension of the original Craftmatic I adjustable bed. The adjustable frame has evolved over the past 40 years from the one used in the first adjustable beds designed expressly for home use. Model I includes the mattress, as do all Craftmatic beds.

Five mattress types are offered: The Dual Plush/Firm is a two-sided mattress, firm on one side and medium ("plush medium firm") on the other. The remaining types are Luxury Firm, Plush Soft, Euro Top, and Memory Foam. Each of these types is distinguished by its comfort layers. Various kinds and heights of foams are used to achieve the designed comfort levels. In the case of the Euro Top, this also includes the construction. Consequently, overall mattress heights vary accordingly.

Support for these mattress is provided by a 6" high, 375 coil-count, 13-gauge Bonnell innerspring. One might think that a Bonnell innerspring would not be suitable for an adjustable bed, because older mattresses of this type have stiffening rods around the top and the bottom of the coil unit. But Craftmatic has a Bonnell unit flexible enough for an articulating bed frame.

The current Craftmatic I adjustable bed frames exibit several features not found on the original. The first models were controlled by buttons on the frame of the bed. These were soon followed by a wired remote which made them more convenient to use. Now wireless remotes are standard. Also, the number and range of positions is greater. The remote can be programmed for the most desirable positions.

Lift motors for the adjustable frame are quieter than the original ones. They can lift up to 450 lbs. A heavy duty motor is also available with a 600-lb. lifting capacity.

Another added standard feature is the massage. This is a full-body wave. The time can be set for up to 30 minutes. Heat is optional.

The mattress covers on the Craftmatic Model I adjustable beds have a stretch knit top panel. They are quilted with a fire barrier included for safety.

Since the Model I by Craftmatic is a complete bed with both adjustable frame and mattress, this has to be taken into consideration when evaluating the price. To fairly compare the cost to other adjustable beds, add the price of the competing adjustable base to that of an equivalent mattress. In the case of the Model I, this means a Bonnell coil mattress with nearly identical comfort layers. This is harder than it sounds, since Craftmatic has not listed the heights of these mattresses nor the thicknesses of the comfort layers. The only way to find out this information is to ask the company either through the request for information form on their website or by calling them by phone.

The mechanisms of the Craftmatic Model I are warranted for 15 years prorated. They also have a 31-day trial period.
