Best Waterbed

As determined by customer reviews on retailer sites

Until now, waterbeds have been barely covered on Beds.Org reviews. Consequently, there are no customer reviews on our site. However, waterbeds do deserve coverage, especially since less than 30 years ago they accounted for 22% of mattress sales in the U.S. and they still constitute an enduring segment of the mattress market.

Here we will attempt to identify the best waterbeds (also called water mattresses and flotation beds) currently available. Our findings are based on online customer reviews on retailers websites. Although there are many sites listing waterbeds, only three have usable reviews: Amazon, Wayfair and Walmart.

Waterbeds are either hardside or softside. Within these categories are many variables. For now, we will consider waterbeds in general. The threshold for ratings of water mattresses is 20 reviews. A second list has a threshold of 50. The higher threshold means the average ratings are more representative of customers' views.

Manufacturers of the top-rated water beds are Classic Mattresses, InnoMax, Boyd Specialty Sleep (Boyd Flotation), Better Sleep (by Classic Brands), and Blue Magic. — Blue Magic is actually a manufacturer of cleaning, conditioning and repair products rather than a manufacturer of waterbeds. The Blue Magic waterbed conditioner is sold with many brands of waterbeds.

Rankings from 20 or more reviews

The highest rated waterbed is Classic Mattress's Semi Waveless Waterbed Mattress with a 4.8 average rating based on 31 reviews. This is listed on Amazon as well as other retailers.

The second highest rated waterbed is the Blue Magic Fiber 1000 kisted on Walmart's online store. With 50 reviews, the average rating is 4.5 out of 5.0. Fiber 1000 is actually a Boyd Flotation model.

The third top rating goes to the Boyd Flotation Lumbar Supreme by Boyd Specialty Sleep. Its average rating is 4.43 with 56 reviews. It is sold on Amazon.

Number 4 is Blue Magic Fiber 3500 Hardside Waterbed Mattress, another Boyd Flotation bed carried by Walmart. It has a 4.4 rating with 84 reviews.

The Sanctuary Free Flow Full Wave waterbed made by InnoMax is sold on both Amazon and Wayfair as well as other retailers. It is the most reviewed (180 reviews), and it has a 4.36 average rating (combined from both retailers).

Next is the Free Flow Waterbed Mattress by Classic, sold with a 4-oz bottle of conditioner. 24 customers gave it an average rating of 4.2

Better Sleep is listed as the source of the 7th highest ranked waterbed, the Semi Waveless Waterbed Mattress. With only 21 reviews, the average rating is 4.2.

Another Blue Magic waterbed sold through Walmart is the Night Rest Freeflow Waterbed Mattress. 58 customers reviewed this model, giving it an average rating of 4.1.

The second highest number of reviews also goes to InnoMax. This is an indicator of the company's market share of waterbeds. The ninth rated mattress (with a threshold of 20) is the Waveless Waterbed Mattress with Contour Lumbar. This is for hardside waterbeds. 92 reviewers gave it a 4.06 average rating.

Rankings from 50 or more reviews

When the threshold is raised to 50 customer reviews, six of these 9 waterbeds remain: Fiber 1000, Lumbar Supreme, Fiber 3500 Hardside, Sanctuary Free Flow, Night Rest Freeflow, and Waveless Hard Side Lumbar.  Ranking by manufacturer yields Boyd Flotation as the overwhelming favorite, followed by InnoMax, Night Rest and Classic Brands Mattresses.
