Royal-Pedic

Royal-Pedic Mattress Manufacturing in Beverly Hills, California, has been in business since 1946, specializing in high-end mattresses. Here is the company history in their own words:

Company History and Overview

The founder of Royal-Pedic, Abe Kaplan learned and mastered high end mattress making during the 1930's to the mid 1940's at the prestigious Heals of London, a 300 year old manufacturer of mattresses of England's Royal Family and other dignitaries. In 1946, Kaplan set out for America in search of a region suited for high-end, exquisite quality, handcrafted mattresses. Shortly after settling in Los Angeles, Kaplan's mattress business began to blossom.

Royal-Pedic mattresses soon became the premier choice for many Los Angeles based interior design firms. Most notably, the team of architect Paul Williams and interior designer, Marti Brent, whose clients included many of Hollywood's most recognizable film actors and actresses. For the nearly four decades that Abe and his partner Steve owned Royal-Pedic they manufactured mattresses for innumerable clients, including an endless list of film celebrities, and six U.S. presidents, including John F. Kennedy, who insisted on Royal-Pedic mattresses wherever he traveled.

In 1984, Royal-Pedic was purchased by the Kelemen family, who to this day, diligently continue the tradition of high standards of hand crafted quality and use of the finest natural materials in mattress making. In addition, Royal-Pedic has expanded it's offering of mattresses to include natural latex mattresses, pillowtop mattresses, pillowtop pads, and organic cotton mattresses so customers have a variety of comfort levels and preferences to choose from.

Ronald Reagan's favorite was a custom ( 84" x 84") size that has since been requested by many. Although, the largest mattress we ever made was for the legendary basketball star, Wilt Chamberlain. It was our Royal-Pedic All Cotton Mattress in a 10' long x 10' long! It took 8 men to deliver the mattress. Wilt said that if it didn't fit through the doorway to take it away. Fortunately it fit through his custom-sized front double door.

Royal-Pedic's on going commitment to its customers assures them of absolutely of the finest mattresses they can own.

The Ronald Reagan 84"x84" mattress is only one example of custom-sized/shaped mattresses made by Royal-Pedic. Their website has a "Custom Sizes" tab. Three categories are listed under this tab: Giant Size Mattresses (Great for extra large bedrooms), Round Mattresses (Marcia Mix mattress pictured), Yacht Mattresses (We make the mattress based upon a cardboard cut out of the sleeping area).

Major materials/components used by Royal-Pedic in their mattresses are Long Staple Cotton, Natural Latex, Untreated Lamb’s Wool, and the Royal-Flex® Innerspring System. The cotton is grown in California and Texas, a long-fiber grade normally used for furniture padding, with "an organic option." The latex is made from the sap of rubber trees (a sustainable resource) in Malaysia and Indonesia, and is rinsed several times to remove all allergens. It brings the advantages of natural latex - mold/mildew resistant, dust mite resistant, anti-microbial. The untreated lamb's wool is from France and used in the quilting. And the Royal-Flex® Innerspring System is Swiss engineered offset coils, featuring a high coil count and double-tempering.

Royal-Pedic boast of its expert hand craftsmanship, crediting it with attracting a clientelle of royalty, presidents, and celebrities. In other words, those who can afford the best buy what they want. This is a claim which Royal-Pedic shares with other high-end mattress manufacturers. Areas of caftsmanship cited by Royal-Pedic are layering the staple cotton, sewing on state-of-the-art machines, hand tufting, and making the box springs (with the Webster Lock System).

Besides mattresses, Royal-Pedic makes pillows and pillowtop pads. They also sell adjustable beds. Royal-Pedic mattresses can be found at retailers in most states and Canada as well as in Africa.
