Marshall Mattress Company (Marshall Ventilated Mattress Company, Limited) was founded by James Marshall, an English-born engineer who invented individually wrapped pocket coils and patented them in 1900. He established the Marshall Mattress Company in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to manufacture mattresses using his innerspring support system.
From the Marshall Mattress website:
Marshall conceived of a mattress whereby internal independent springs would provide both support and comfort within the mattress itself. Marshall produced pre-compressed cylindrical coil springs, each sewn inside an individual cotton fabric pocket, which provided uplifting support on its own. When fitted together, the coils became an independent suspension system that contoured to each person’s form and weight, providing unsurpassed support and comfort. When upholstered, a finished Marshall mattress not only reduced physical pressure under the sleeper, but actually relieved it as well. Consequently, Marshall’s pocket spring-filled mattress system.
Within 10 years of its founding, his Marshall Mattress sleep sets graced the rooms of many fine hotels and homes across Canada and the United States.
With a unique Canadian connection, Marshall convinced the English shipping company Cunard “White Star” Lines (that had its origins in the Canadian Maritimes) to use Marshall mattresses on all its cross-Atlantic voyages. Similarly Marshall supplied Canadian Pacific Railways with its own unique pocket spring mattresses used in all its ships, railway lines and hotel properties.
Marshall-L.A. Young Industries and Chrysler Corporation further adapted the Marshall pocket spring cushion design for use in ‘top-of-the-line’ Chrysler Imperial car seating. The Marshall Spring (i.e. pocket spring) cushion design is considered the gold standard for fine furniture to this day.
The original Marshall pocket spring system continues to be used in the production of healthcare mattresses that provide exceptional comfort and full body support while simultaneously reducing surface pressure tension against the body of the supported sleeper.
Today, the company focuses on innerspring mattresses using pocket coil support. All of their current models are handmade. The new Bespoke Collection of high-end mattresses is the most expensive Marshall Mattress line, with models priced over $10,000 (Canadian). They have other collections which are lower-priced. The current listing on the company's website includes 28 models. This does not include three of the Bespoke models which are available exclusively through The Hudson's Bay Company.
Marshall Mattresses are sold through several retailers across Canada, from St. Johns, Newfoundland to Vancouver, British Columbia. One of the retailers, Barrymore Furniture, has a manager for sales in the United States. Mattresses in the Bespoke Collection have a 15-year warranty. The warranty for the rest is for 10 years.
