WJ Southard Mattress

WJ Southard Mattress (WJS), a manufacturer of mattresses and bedding located in Syracuse, New York, has been in business for almost 100 years. In 1915, Willis J. Southard bought a rug cleaning business and branched out into making and cleaning mattresses made with horsehair. Sometime in the next 14 years, Southard began making innerspring mattresses, using the same methods and materials used today in producing the Archetype. Still a family owned and operated business, WJ Southard Mattress is now headed by fourth-generation family member Neal Van Patten.

In the 1950s, WJ Southard Mattress began manufacturing latex mattresses, which it still does. Still located in Syracuse, Southard offers five models, two innerspring and three latex, which "are handmade, using techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation."

WJ Southard Mattress is also known as WJ Southard - Organic Mattresses. In its innerspring mattresses, WJS uses 14 gauge wire coils containing 95% recycled steel. Its other materials are also environmentally responsible:

* Organic cotton fabric and batting from cotton grown, carded and woven in the United States;
* Organic 100% botanical latex, made from rubber tree sap produced in Sri Lanka;
* WJS blend of organic and pure wool (using Eco-Wool, and "uncertified" organic wool from small producers).

Though hand-made in a single factory in New York State, WJ Southard mattresses are sold in many places in the USA. Stores carrying WSJ organic mattresses are in the following states: California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin. They may also be ordered online on WJ Southard's website.
