In 2016, E.S. Kluft released the Karpen Collection to honor King Karpen on the 75th anniversary of the company he founded, Aireloom Bedding. Aireloom was purchased by Kluft after the death of Mr. Karpen in 1992. Here is the obituary of King Karpen from the Los Angeles Times:
King Karpen, 80, who despite being blind founded the Aireloom Bedding Co. in Alhambra, one of the largest makers of premium bedding and sleep sofas in the country. Karpen, who won many home furnishing awards during his lengthy career, designed pillow-top mattresses shortly after establishing Aireloom in 1950 at a time when he had lost 95% of his sight. His blindness, caused by a rare childhood disease, worsened as he grew older but he maintained quality control over his products through a keen sense of touch. His knowledge of his factory's machinery was said to be such that he could dictate repair instructions by examining a faulty part with his hands. In Los Angeles on Nov. 19 of the complications of cancer.
The Karpen Collection of luxury mattresses has three mattress models and a topper. They are the Bel Aire, Pacific Coast Luxury Firm, and Pacific Coast Firm. These models are the same in the quilting, the support system and the foundation. Where they differ is in the comfort layers.
The quilt on each Karpen Collection mattress has fabric of 100% rayon over a 1.2-lb. layer of silk and wool fibers. Under this is a fire resistant layer of HiLoft fiber (rayon infused with silica). All this is quilted to a 1½" and 1" layer of high density polyurethane foam and a cotton tricot backing.
The support core in each model is an innerspring of nested pocket coils. These 15-gauge and 16-gauge coils are ordered in zones for better support in the middle. The coil count is 1,139 in Queeen size, and 1,451 in King.
The foundation is a box spring of coils which are 8-way hand tied. The coils have an hourglass design.
All three Karpen Collection mattresses have two layers of Talalay latex, a layer of organic cotton, and a layer of Aireloom's Aireluxe foam. The latex layers in Bel Aire have 1" each of Luxus latex and luxury firm Talalay latex. In the Pacific Coast Luxury Firm, these are two 1" layers of luxury firm Talalay. These same layers in the Pacific Coast Firm are extra firm.
The 1" layer of Aireluxe is plush in the Bel Aire and the PC Luxury Firm, and firm in the PC Firm. Bel Aire adds an inch of 5-lb. slow recovery visco (memory foam) above the Aireluxe.
The Bel Aire is about 14" high, and 13" is the approximate height of the two Pacific Coast models. They are covered by a 15-year warranty.
