Beautyrest Recharge Gia (Lydia Manor)
Gia (called
Lydia Manor by some retailers) is a series of
innerspring mattresses in the
Beautyrest Recharge Collection by
Simmons. There are at least five models,
Luxury Firm Pillow Top,
Plush Pillow Top,
Plush,
Luxury Firm, and
Extra Firm, ranging from 12" to 14" in height, and from 2.5 to 7.5 on the comfort scale. Although these are listed as innerspring mattresses, a few retailers call them hybrids because of the
foam comfort layers.
All of these feature support of the
Beautyrest Pocketed Coil®
Technology. This relies on the 800 count individually wrapped
coils. Also called "Marshall coils" after their inventor James Marshall, these coils dampen motion transfer as demonstrated in
Simmons' popular bowling ball ad, where an array of bowling pins on the coils remained in place when a bowling ball was dropped on the coils. This means that one sleeper's movements will not disturb another sleeper.
Besides reduction of motion disturbance, pocket coils conform to a sleeper's body contours. This provides support for parts of the body between the large areas, such as the hips and shoulders, to reduce pressure points and keep the spine in line. The
Pocketed Coil innerspring unit lies on a ½" pad of
Energy Foam to protect the coils by absorbing impacts.
Another key feature is the
AirCool Design, which promotes air circulation through the mattress for cooling and freshness. This counters the accumulation of heat to keep the mattress from becoming too warm for comfortable sleep. Components of this system are the ventilated open-cell memory foam in the quilting, configuration of foams for vertical ventilation, the ventilated foam encasement, and mesh border panels for air flow into and out of the mattress.
The
cover of
Gia mattresses is knit Damask quilted to two 1" sheets of
AirCool Foam. The foam is for cushioning, while the open-cell structure makes it more resilient as well as breathable. The cover fabric is also quilted to 1.25-lb.
Celestra, a bonded-fiber polypropylene quilt-backing.
The comfort layers of each
Beautyrest Recharge Gia mattress has ½" of
Gel Touch and ½" of
AirCool Memory Foam.
Gel Touch is a blending of
gel and poly foam for pressure relief. The
AirCool Memory Foam combines the conformability of
memory foam with a breathable cell configuration. Other comfort layer components determine the final comfort levels of the models.
The two pillowtop models,
Gia Luxury Firm Pillow Top and
Gia Plush Pillow Top, have 2" each of
Plush Comfort Foam just under the quilting. Each has ½" of
Energy Foam (very firm) on the bottom of the comfort layer just above the innerspring unit. They differ in the wire gauge of the coils, 13¾ for the firmer model, 15½ for the Plush.
The
Gia Luxury Firm (tight top) and
Gia Plush (tight top) do not have
Energy Foam in the comfort layers, but they do have ½" of
Plush Comfort Foam at the bottom of the stack. The difference in firmness of these two models can be seen in the coils, with the
Plush having 15½-gauge and the
Luxury Firm 13¾-gauge.
The
Beautyrest Recharge Gia Extra Firm mattress shares 13¾-gauge coils with the
Gia Plush. However, it has a ½"
Energy Foam bottom comfort layer.
Energy Foam is a heavy grade of
polyurethane foam. It has a high ILD, and its role is shock absorber.
The
Beautyrest Recharge Gia models are compatible with
foundations such as
platforms (
Triton Powerbeam Foundation) and
adjustable beds (
Renew Powerbase and
Renew Powerbase Plus). These mattresses carry the
Simmons 10-year non-prorated warranty (though some retailers offer a longer warranty). They are available at many national, regional or local retail outlets.
