BedInABox made its name by compressing memory foam mattresses enough to be put into a box and shipped by FedEx and UPS.
Serenity GEL has a 3" layer of
CoolRest Gel™, a key feature of all
BedInABox mattresses.
CoolRest™ is a gel-infused visco-elastic memory foam. It and the other foams used by
Bed-In-A-Box use less fossil hydrocarbons (petroleum) than the foams of half a decade ago. Depending on the foam, they contain 5% to 20%
BiOH polyols produced by Cargill. These polyols are made from soy oils. The actual foams are formulated and made in North Carolina by BASF.
The role of memory foam is to conform to the contours of the sleeper's body. It relieves pressure points, which can become painful. This material was originally developed to cushion astronauts on lift-off. It was later adapted for use by consumers, first in seats and pillows, then in mattresses. Memory foam also dampens the transfer of motion. This keeps one sleeper's movements from disturbing another sleeper.
Memory foam tends to accumulate heat, becoming too hot to sleep comfortably, so many manufacturers, including
BedInABox, add gel to memory foam to conduct heat away from the sleeping surface and dissipate it. Additionally, modern methods of making memory foam generate a cell structure which promotes air flow, further cooling the mattress. Also, gel enables manufacturers to refine the support properties of memory foam to thier specifications.
Underlying the
CoolRest Gel™ layer in the
Serenity GEL mattress is the 8" support core of
High Resiliency Support Foam. It is there to provide even support to the memory foam layer. This fosters correct spinal alignment while the memory foam cradles the sleeper. It also prolongs the life of the memory foam, keeping it from sagging.
Above the
CoolRest Gel™ is the
Outlast®, which is 2" deep.
Outlast® was first developed for space suits to control temperatures for the astronauts. This space-age fabric uses phase change materials (PCMs), trade-named
Thermocules™, to keep temperatures within a desired range. When it is too hot PCMs liquify, absorbing the heat. When it is too cool they solidify, releasing heat. The selection of PCMs for a specified use determine not only the desired range, but also the extremes within which they will work.
To support the
Serenity GEL mattress,
Bed-In-A-Box sells a
BIAB canvas-covered wood-slat foundation and metal bed frames. It also sells several models of platform beds as well as
Leggett & Platt adjustable bases.
