Healthy Kids Mattresses

Berkeley Ergonomics makes mattresses for children and youth. The Healthy Kids Mattresses series includes three models, two innerspring mattresses with German made pocket coils, and an all-natural latex mattress. The first two are described on the BE website. The third is found at certain retailers.

All of the Healthy Kids Mattresses by Berkeley Ergonomics have covers of organic materials–stretch knit cotton quilted to Merino wool. The knit cotton conforms better to the child's body than woven fabric. Merino wool is naturally flame resistant; it's inclusion is to provide fire safety without harmful chemicals. Wool is also breathable, insulating and moisture wicking. This keeps temperatures moderate and the sleeping surface dry. There is an extra layer of wool, more than in the BE mattresses for adults, to act as padding.

The two children's innerspring mattresses have a 6" layer of pocket coils made in Germany. With the padding of the quilting, this brings the basic Healthy Kids Mattress to 6½" high. Pocket coils relieve pressure on larger joints, such as hips and shoulders. At the same time, they support recessed areas, such as the small of the back (lumbar).

Berkeley Ergonomics also has a step-up version for older, heavier kids, the K2. This model is the same as the Healthy Kids basic model, but it adds a 1" layer of Talalay latex for more support and to cushion against the feel of the coils. The latex brings the K2 to 7½" in height.

At least two retailers offer an all-latex children's mattress from Berkeley Ergonomics. This 6½" high latex mattress is described by one as having a 100% natural Talalay latex core, while the other describes it as three layers of 100% natural Talalay latex. The cover is the same as for the other Healthy Kids mattresses. These may be made by request for these particular retail stores, but I do not yet have confirmation.

Most Berkeley Ergonomics retailers carry their Healthy Kids Mattresses, though some of them have their own model names for these, which is common for most mattress manufacturers selling through several retail marketers. The warranty on these children's mattresses is for 10-years, non-prorated, long enough to be outgrown.

Berkeley Ergonomics Healthy Kids Mattresses can be used with the BE slatted foundations, flexible or fixed. Another foundation they can be used with is a platform bed, which may give the added advantage of storage drawers under the bed. All models of Healthy Kids Mattresses are available only in Twin size.
