The non-coil models made by Berkeley Ergonomics are the Natural Talalay Latex mattresses. These have two layers, the support core and the comfort layer, both made of 100% natural latex. The cover is also made of natural materials, cotton and wool, making these all-natural mattresses.
Whether this is one or two models is debatable, since there is a choice of a 7-zoned or solid (non-zoned) support core. This is in addition to the customer's choice of firmness level (four available). One retailer lists these separately, as though they were distinct models.
The generic name, Natural Talalay Latex, is used by Berkeley Ergonomics. Market names, however, vary by retailer: Promise, Amsterdam, Serene, Linden, Natural Talalay Latex, and All-Latex. Get into the details as listed by the stores, and it is the same mattress.
Latex foam, more specifically Talalay latex, is the only foam used by Berkeley Ergonomics. They cite the advantages of latex, which agree with those listed by other manufacturers: latex is more resilient, is cooler, is free of toxic and unpleasant emissions, is more breathable, and is resistant to dust mites and other bothersome organisms than other foams. Not only latex, but this company uses all-natural latex. There are differences among manufacturers over the relative advantages of 100% natural latex and mostly-natural blended latex. BE comes down on the side of all-natural.
The latex in this latex mattress, called Vita Talalay, is made in the Netherlands by Radium Foam BV from rubber tree sap.
The Talalay latex support core of the Natural Talalay Latex mattress is 6" high. The customer chooses zoned or un-zoned latex, as well as a firmer or less-firm core. The zoned latex core has seven zones: head & neck, shoulders, lumbar, pelvic (hips), knees, lower legs, ankles & feet. The relative sizes of the zones in the illustration seems to indicate that the Pelvic Zone is the largest with three smaller ones toward either end of the mattress. But the Head & Neck zone may be larger than the Foot & Ankle zone, making the mattress uni-directional (can't reverse head and foot).
The 2" comfort layer of the Natural Talalay Latex mattress brings the mattress proper to 8" high. It is made of 100% natural latex, notably softer than the support core. Choices in the firmness of this layer combine with those of the support core for the four available comfort levels. Talalay latex yields pressure relief, and also eliminates motion disturbance.
The cover of the Natural Talalay Latex mattress is organic cotton quilted to organic wool. This makes a breathable, temperature-neutral cover. The wool is insulating, and is also a natural flame resistant.
The recommended foundation for the Natural Talalay Latex Mattress is a Flexible Wood Slat Base from Berkeley Ergonomics. Made in Germany, the support of the slats is adjustable. Another option is a fixed-slat foundation. Also available is a powered adjustable bed with flexible slats, which has more airflow than typical adjustable bases.
Carried by several stores in the United States and Canada, the Natural Talalay Latex Mattress has a 1-year non-prorated warranty from Berkeley Ergonomics.
