Single Coil Models

Berkeley Ergonomics lists three Single Coil Models: Interactive, Active Zone SC, and BE 1500. These are to be understood as the base models. Other model names are used on retailers' websites. For instance, the BE 1500 appears as two models, Stockholm and Malmö, at The Mattress & Sleep Company in Alberta, Canada, but the Single Coil model at Scott Jordan Furniture is the Oslo while their Stockholm is a Double Coil mattress. All three basic models in the Single Coil series have covers of organic cotton quilted to organic wool and 2" comfort layers of Talalay latex.

Cotton is breathable, as is wool. Organic cotton is a very servicable yet affordable material. Wool is cushioning, and it is also a natural fire retardant, meeting federal open flame standards without the use of chemicals.

Latex is very resilient, giving a "bounce" to the top of the mattress. Talalay latex is breathable, with pores to allow air to flow through for cooling and freshness. Letting air circulate also helps keep the interior of the mattress dry. This is to prolong the life of the mattress by reducing the chances of coil corrosion.

The distinction among the three Single Coil Models by Berkeley Ergonomics is in the coils. All three innerspring units consist of pocket coils. Pocket coils are selected for their body-contour conforming independent response for pressure relief and motion isolation. In its FAQ section, BE explains that the pockets for the coils are polypropylene, because it is durable

The BE 1500 has 1,500 nested coils. Nesting optimizes coil density for more even support and a finer response.

The Swedish-made coils in the Active Zone model are pre-compressed. According to Berkeley Ergonomics, this produces a softer response than uncompressed coils.

Apparently, the top model in the Single Coil series is the Interactive. The coils in these mattresses alternate in height. This allows half the coils to be more responsive, while the rest of the coils provide firm underlying support. Berkeley Ergonomics indicates that this coil array is more conforming for pressure relief.

Single Coil Models by Berkeley Ergonomics are available with a choice from among four firmness levels. The firmness can be adjusted. Also, the BE Pillow Top can be used to make the mattress plusher. Special sizes, especially European standard bed sizes and mattresses for recreational vehicles, can be made on order. These models are covered by a 10-year non-prorated warranty.
