Like the Presidential Premium Line, the Presidential Elite Pocketed Coil Line (EPC) has three models. Named after one US President, John F. Kennedy, they are Kennedy Firm, Kennedy Plush and Kennedy Pillow-Top.
There is no guessing as to the type of coils used in these innerspring mattresses; it's in the name of the series–pocket coils. Patented by James Marshall (associated with Vispring, Simmons and Marshall Mattress Company) in 1900, they were conceived as a way to relieve pressure point pain in shoulders, hips, knees and elbows. They also relieve back pain by supporting the non-protruding parts of the body.
Besides this, encased pocket coils do not transfer motion from one part of the bed to another. This reduces or eliminates partner disturbance, so when one sleeper turns over or gets out of bed the other one is not awakened.
A queen size mattress in the Presidential Elite Pocketed Coil Line has 713 of 8" high pocket coils. The coil array is girded by foam encasement to hold the coils in place and support the edge of the sleeping surface.
This innerspring is topped by a heavy duty insulator pad. The pad is made of compressed fibers. Its purpose is to keep coils from tearing the foam padding above and to keep the foam from jamming the coils.
Each of these models has a ⅞" base layer of high density foam. Its location in the mattress is not specified, but pocket coil mattresses usually have a base layer underneath the coils, so I'll assume that is where this is.
An upholstery layer is above the insulator pad. This is made of high density polyurethane foam. It is ⅞" high in Firm and Pillow-Top, and ⅝" in Plush. There is more variety in foam layers above this.
The Kennedy Firm has a ⅝" layer of polyurethane comfort foam and a ⅞" layer of Chase-Flex cushion material. Kennedy Plush has the the ⅞" Chase-Flex. Kennedy Pillow-Top has 1½" of convoluted soft cushion polyfoam.
The next layer for each mattress consists of BIA's Cool Gel Swirl gel foam. Gel does more than cool. It lends a fluid-like support to the mattress.
Kennedy Pillow-Top adds a separate layer, the pillow top, which is an attached mattress topper. The material in this layer–appropriately called an "innertopper"–is 2" of convoluted polyurethane foam.
The cover fabric for the entire series is an imported damask circular knit (for the Pillow-Top it is called "Teddy Bear"). The fiber is not named. It could be cotton or polyester, or a blend of the two. In Kennedy Firm, this is quilted to a ½" triple layer of poly quilting foams. In Plush and Pillow-Top, the material is ⅝" of luxury quilting foam and Dacron fibers (Dacron is brand of rayon).
Sold through BIAM retailers, mattresses in the Presidential Elite Pocketed Coil Line are covered by BIA Mattresses with a 15-year non-prorated warranty.
