The Presidential Economy Line is one of five series in the Presidential Collection by BIA Mattresses (BIAM), a subsidiary of Bedding Industries of America. As in the other series of this collection, each model is named after a United States president. This group includes six models. A set of three are named after George Washington, and another set after Grover Cleveland: Washington Firm, Washington Plush, Washington Pillow-Top, Cleveland Firm, Cleveland Plush, Cleveland Pillow-Top.
All Presidential Economy Line models are innerspring mattresses. Though the coil type is not identified, the coil count of 416 makes it likely that these are continuous coils. The foam and cotton in the padding are selected for affordable comfort.
The cover of each model is made of imported damask in a circular knit. The fiber of some covers is not named, but it may be cotton or polyester. This is quilted to foam. The quilting in some models also includes Dacron, a brand of rayon.
The innerspring unit is listed as "special height." Subtracting the thicknesses of the padding and quilting layers indicates that it is about 6¼" high. Edge support and framing of the innerspring are supplied by a pair of perimeter rods, one at the top, one at the bottom, coupled with foam encasement.
The three Cleveland models add the BIA Spinal Zone feature. Another perimeter rod is added to the innerspring on the center section. This area supports most of the weight of the sleeper's body.
The innerspring is topped with an insulator pad. The construction is not stated, but insulators for other mattresses are made of compressed fibers.
The comfort layers and their heights differ by set and by model.
Models in the Washington set have a ⅞" layer of high density polyurethane foam. The Firm adds a ⅞" Chase-Flex heavy duty insulator pad, In the Plush this is a Chase-Flex upholstery foam, and in the Pillow-Top it is high density upholstery foam. To this the Plush adds 2" of convoluted soft polyurethane foam. In the Pillow-Top, this is a 2" intertopper of soft cushion grade polyfoam in the pillow top.
Models in the Washington set also differ in the quilting. Firm has a double layer of ½" PU quilting foam (1" total), while the Plush and Pillow-Top have ½" of quilting foam plus the Dacron fibers.
Cleveland set mattresses also vary in their padding. The insulator in the Firm is ⅞" Chase-Flex heavy duty pad, but in the Plush and Pillow-Top it is just an HD insulator pad. On this pad, the Firm has 1¾" of HD polyurethane upholstery foam. In the Plush, this is a 1½" layer of cushion soft polyfoam. And in the Pillow-Top, the 1½" layer is in the pillow top.
As in the Washington set, Cleveland models vary in the quilting. In Plush and Pillow-Top, this is ½" of quilting foam plus Dacron fibers, while in the Firm it is a double layer of ½" high-density polyfoam.
The best foundation for these mattresses would be a box spring, but they could be used on a platform bed.
The two sets differ in their warranties. For Washington models, BIAM has a 5/10 year limited warranty. For Cleveland mattresses, this warranty is non-prorated.
