The mattresses in the Presidential Two Sided Series of BIA Mattresses are named after Pesident William Howard Taft, the successor to Teddy Roosevelt. He was later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, making him the only person to have held both offices. Curiously, he was also the heaviest person to have held either office.
This series has three models: Taft Firm, Taft Plush, and Taft Pillow Top. These are innerspring mattresses, with 390 coils in a queen size mattress. With as low a coil count as this, the springs must be heavy-gauge Bonnell coils. The innerspring unit is a special height. The coil height is not stated in any of the mattress descriptions, but calculating from the other components brings it to about 4½ inches, the height of many sofa bed mattresses, but with the extra padding. These models were referred to as "hybrids" in a news article, and that fits the apparent ratio of cushioning materials to coils.
This series has two-sided mattresses. This means padding on both sides of the support core/innerspring.The mattress can be flipped over to use padding on the other side and give padding on one side a break from contouring to body shapes. This increases the expected lifetime of the mattress in two ways. As long as the coils hold up, one side can be used of the padding fails on the other side. And regular flipping, two or three times a year, helps the padding itself to last longer with time to recover.
The innerspring is encircled by BIA's "U" Guard Perimeter Support System. With no more details provided, it's structure is open to imagination. However, it sounds like an enhancement of the perimeter rods. Whatever it is, besides providing for the integrity of the innerspring it also serves as edge support for the sleeping surface.
Two of the models, Plush and Pillow-Top, have heavy duty insulator pads between the coils and the foams. Just out from this is a high density Fiber-Flex upholstery layer. This is ⅞" high in Firm and Plush, and ½" in Pillow-Top.
Out from the Fiber-Flex upholstery material in the Taft Firm and the Taft Plush is a ⅞" layer of HD polyurethane foam. In the Taft Pillow-Top, this layer is HD Fiber-Flex comfort material.
The next layers in Firm and Plush are HD toppers. Nothng is said about the material in them. Pillow-Top has a 2" intertopper (content of the pillowtop section) of soft cushion polyfoam.
The cover of Presidential Two-Sided Series mattresses is quilted to a flame resistant liner and quilting foam. In the Taft Firm, this is ½" high, but in the Taft Plush and the Taft Pillow-Top it is ⅝" high, and paired with Dacron fibers (Dacron is a brand of rayon). The cover fabric itself is imported damask in a circular knit. The fiber is not identified. I may be cotton or polyester. Or it could be a blend.
Presidential Two-Sided Series mattresses are sold through retailers (BIA does not sell online). They are covered with a 5/10 warranty.
