Kai is the highest of the Blissful Nights in-store mattresses. Made by South Bay International, Kai is a memory foam mattress with two layers of memory foam. It is the essential equivalent of the Escape 14.5" Luxury Memory Foam Mattress sold by Costco under the Sleep Science brand, also made by South Bay, with a half-inch pillow top on the Escape the only discernable distinction.
Kai's memory foam is the densest used in Blissful Nights mattresses (but the same as in the Escape). The 2" upper layer is 7-lb. of this visco-elastic material and the 3" lower layer is 5-lb. foam, making 5" of very dense memory foam. Even though much firmer than most memory foam, this is still conforming, following the contours of sleepers' bodies for relief of pressure on the hips and shoulders and support for the lower back. This means less sinking-in for average-size users. For more substantial sleepers, this means not bottoming out.
The memory foam comfort section is girded by South Bay's Wedge Edge foam encasement. This extra dense 5" x 5" foam rail with a triangular cross section is especially designed for edge support in an all-foam mattress. This sets South Bay mattresses (Blissful Nights, Sleep Science and Advanced Sleep Technologies) apart from the majority of specialty sleep mattresses, which depend on the support core for edge support. This also enables the comfort layers in these models to have a higher profile relative to the support core. The Wedge not only provides edge support to the sleeping surface; girding the comfort foams makes them more effective in supporting the sleepers.
The support core of the 14" Blissful Nights Kai mattress is 9" of very firm polyurethane foam. This block is called the Air Channel Support Base, because the top surface is scored with a grid of air channels to promote air circulation in the mattress's interior. Combined with the the extra dense memory foam, this puts Kai in the category of special support mattresses (such as the Grandbed by Tempur-Pedic).
The foams used in the Kai are all certified by CertiPur-US as free from harmful substances, such as "prohibited" phthalates and PBDEs. It also has a low emission rate of volatile organic compounds.
Blissful Nights Adjustable Base
The bottom of the support core has relief cuts where the mattress would bend with the articulation of an adjustable bed, such as the Blissful Nights Adjustble Base (the same as the Motion Trend by Sleep Science), making it more compatible with this type of foundation. Kai is also compatible with platform beds, solid top box bases, and closely-spaced european wood slats. However, old-style box springs are unsuitable for this kind of bed.
The cover of Kai is washable, with a zippered top panel for easy removal and reattachment. The fabric in the cover is not specified in available descriptions.
The Blissful Nights Kai is covered by a 20-year warranty from South Bay International.
