Boyd Memory Foam
Boyd Specialty Sleep announces, "Our new line of Gel Enhanced Memory Foam Mattresses is here!" Some of the newer mattresses in the
Boyd Memory Foam collection have gel infused into their memory foam. Boyd's version of this is "Temperature neutral MicroTec Gel™ enhanced memory foam." The widely known cooling effect of gel is enhanced by increased air circulation, what Boyd calls, "patent pending STAY COOL channel venting."
Actually, the implementation of these concepts is not unique to Boyd Specialty Sleep. Almost all mattress manufacturers are now using some form of these innovations to counter the tendency of memory foam to accumulate sleepers' body heat. And memory foam beds are currently the largest category of specialty mattresses (those with support other than springs). What is patented are the specific details of implementation. Comparison of brands and models is required to evaluate the relative effectiveness of these competing applications of gel foam technology. In the end, this will tend to be subjective. What is more effective for one person may not be so for another.
In 2013, Boyd Specialty Sleep unveiled its Boyd Responda Flex memory foam mattresses. They claim that they have the same characteristcs of TempurPedic mattresses, but at a lower price. Now Boyd has two series of memory foam beds:
Boyd Gel Rest Memory Foam and
Boyd Responda Flex Memory Foam.
Of four models listed on the BSS site for the
Boyd Gel Rest Memory Foam series (408, 410, 412, 413), the 408 has a 6" FoamSpring base layer and the others have 8" base layers. The other layers are memory foam. Each model features gel enhanced memory foam in the thickest memory foam layer. Where they really differentiate is the composition and placement of the additional layers, such as two 1" memory foam layers (413), convoluted memory foam and HD support foam support layer (412), covoluted HD support foam (410), and just the MicroTec Gel layer (408). Each of them has a stretchable poly-cotton cover with micro-suede accents. All models carry the same 25 year warranty.
The
Boyd Responda Flex Memory Foam models are 5062 (12"), 5082 (12"), 5102 (10"), 5121 (8"), and 5122 (6"). Boyd Specialty Sleep will likely add more models in the future. These mattresses, which range from 6" to 12" in height, are not described as having gel. They all share Boyd's "Reflexa Foam" base layer, a principal layer of solid memory foam, and a removeable washable cover. They are differentiated by the thicknesses of their shared layers and by additional layers. The additional layers include convoluted engineered latex foam, solid HD engineered latex foam, and quilted memory foam. One model has bamboo fiber cover fabric, while the rest have "soft micro-quilt fabric."
