Broyhill O2

One of the two new Broyhill-branded offerings by Boyd Specialty Sleep is the Broyhill O2 Series (the other is the Broyhill Cube Series). The O2 in the name stands for Oxygen (O2). The signature feature of the O2 models is Celliant fibers in the covers, used to stimulate blood circulation and increase blood oxygen levels.

Celliant, developed and manufactured by Hologenix, LLC, is polyester fibers with 13 thermo-active minerals embedded in the material itself. When these minerals are warmed by body heat, they emit infrared radiation. The minerals used are selected for emitted wavelengths which stimulate blood flow in nearby tissues. This stimulation has been verified in tests conducted by several institutions.

Celliant is now used in athletic clothing and therapeutic socks and gloves. It is also used in mattresses. Among mattress manufacturers, besides Boyd Specialty Sleep, using Celliant are Kingsdown, Ironman Mattress, Sealy and Bios Sleep System. Celliant does not compose the cover fabric, but is woven or knit into it. The expected cover fabric for Broyhill O2 mattress models could be silk, cashmere, rayon from bamboo, or any other fiber used by Boyd in their mattresses.

Broyhill O2 is a three-mattress series scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2015. According to bedding and furniture industry news sources, the target customers are 45 years old and under.

The Broyhill O2 Series models are classified as latex mattresses. The comfort layers are gel-infused engineered latex foam. Engineered latex is used by mattresses in Boyd's Natural Flex Latex line. Latex is conforming, yet very resilient, combining support and comfort. It is also anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic. Boyd's engineered latex is ventilated for air flow.

The expected support cores for the Broyhill O2 mattresses are Boyd's high-density polyurethane support foam, called FoamSpring. This undergirds all foams above it to provide basic support for the sleeper(s) and undergird the comfort foams, keeping them from overflexing and prolonging their usable lifetime.

Compatible foundations for the Broyhill O2 Series include platforms, adjustable beds, and others with a firm, flat surface.

If the Broyhill O2 Series follows the lead of others from Boyd Specialty Sleep, the expected warranty is for 20 years. These mattresses will be available through outlets carrying the Broyhill brand of bedroom furniture.

1.Serta Motion Essentials Adjustable Foundation

I did a great deal of research, trying to decide which type of mattress to buy. The more you look the harder it becomes. I narrowed it down to Memory Foam, Latex and Coil Spring w/pillow top. Memory Foam and Latex (chemical created) both have strong chemical odor. Coil Spring has no odor. I put my new mattress on a simple, hard wired adjustable base. I was concerned about the reviews on Memory Foam mattresses eventually compressing in area where slept on and having a slow response time, however the Latex (rubber) does not produce permanent compression and has a instant response time. The coil spring w/pillow top was more expensive and I was concerned about the pillow top eventually getting compression spots over time. I decided on the Latex for durability, and will need to purchase a memory foam topper to adjust to my comfort level. The topper will cost around $150 but I can replace the topper when it wears out rather than having to replace an entire mattress.

Mattress Rating: 3 starsMattress Comfort: neutral

It has a bouncy (rubber like feel), but it feels firm, too firm for my liking. I plan to purchase a memory foam topper to help make this bed to my comfort level.

Mattress Durability:

It seems well made and durable.

Mattress Support:

Supportive yet bouncy. Does NOT have reinforced edge, so it gives a lot when sitting on the edge of bed.

Mattress Features and Benefits as Advertised:

Celliant fibers in the cover: There is no way to tell if this is real or a gimmick. Personally, this was not a feature that interest me. Latex Gel-infused mattress: I have owned a latex top spring mattress and I can verify that it definitely has that rubbery/bouncy feel of Latex. Odor: I was concerned about the odor from the chemically created Latex vs the true Latex (from a rubber tree). There is a very noticeable chemical odor. I have aired it out, with the windows open for 3 days and the chemical odor is still very noticeable. If this does not dissipate in the next couple of day I will be returning it for a different kind of mattress.

Overall, this mattress feels like it will last a long time.
