Chattam & Wells Throne Bed

"Available only in King size" seems very appropriate for the crown jewel of the re-emergence of the Chattam & Wells brand, the Throne Bed. More than luxury, it is described as "uber luxury" (David Perry in Furniture Today).

This is the 90th anniversary of SpringAir, owner of the brand, and the 20th anniversary of Chattam & Wells. SpringAir was founded in 1926 by Francis "Frank" Karr, and E. S. Kluft started the luxury line Chattam & Wells in 1996. Kluft later established E.S. Kluft & Company.

The new C&W line in the United States, produced by SpringAir licensee Cannon Sleep Products, has five models (more models are available in Australia). The primary support in each of these is offset coils, invented by Mr. Karr. Is that a coincidence?

The Throne Bed was designed and is made by the Massindo Group, the SpringAir affiliate in Indonesia, which supplies SE Asia and Australia. As stated above, it is available only in King size. It comes at a royal price, $17,000 for the mattress alone or $26,000 with all the trimmings. For SpringAir, it is the "2016 International Bed of the Year."

What inspired this bed? It was created to reflect the opulance of European monarchs of the 1500s and 1600s. Or, as Jeffri Massie (head of Massindo Group) put it, to bring to mind the Versailles Palace of Louis XIV, France's most opulant ruler.

Some might want to call the Throne Bed "an innerspring mattress on steroids." It has over 10,000 pocket coils of several heights and widths. These are ordered into fourteen zones. At the moment, I do not know the sizes of the coils, but they are in six layers.

More than an abundance of coils, the Throne Bed has luxurious comfort layers. Components include memory foam infused with gel, Belgian latex foam, horsehair, silk, cashmere, and wool. Coverings consist of leather, suede, satin, and Belgian knit (possibly a damask).

Other amenities are a step stool covered in leather, a mahogany headboard in a Baroque style, and an emblem of Swarovski crystals embedded in 24k gold.

True to the tradition of genuine luxury, the entire mattress is hand-made. This bed is available only through select retailers in America and internationally.

Even if only a few copies of the Throne Bed are sold, it serves as a representative of the Chattam & Wells brand, which has a crown as its emblem.
