ComfortAire Original Comfort oc500
The ComfortAire Original Comfort oc500 is the fourth airbed listed in ComfortAire's current lineup. This is what ComfortAire says about its oc500: "With a new state of the art air control system, an eco-friendly cover and plush comfort, the oc500 offers great value."
The comfort of the ComfortAire Original Comfort oc500 begins with the soft bamboo cover. Why bamboo fiber? Bamboo is highly hygroscopic, which means it has an exceptional ability to absorb moisture, and is also very permeable. The benefit of this is that moisture from the sleeper's body--such as sweat--is carried away, making the sleeping experience more comfortable. Besides this, bamboo also has the health benefit of anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. For the environmentally conscious, bamboo also has the advantage of being a green resource.
Beneath the soft natural bamboo cover is the 3-1/4" convoluted topper made of plant-based (not petrochemical) synthetic latex. The resilient latex foam cushions the user against the firmness of the air support layer below, adding a degree of plush comfort to the necessary support. The convoluted design of the topper makes it more flexible and responsive while allowing air flow to cool the sleeper. According to ComfortAire, "Our formula is unique: static support + dynamic posture control + plush surface comfort = unmatched comfort and durable support that are truly designed to last for the life of the mattress."
The support layer of the ComfortAire Original Comfort oc500 is made of 6" high deep filled latex cotton air chambers, edged by a foam sidewall. This is ComfortAire's Original Technology™, a design used by the airbed industry for 30 years, a proven, reliable system. The air chambers respond individually to the sleeper's body's shape and weight, customizing the support while the sleeper lies there.
The air supply for the Original Comfort oc500 by ComfortAire is controlled digitally by the Whisperflo® 6200 double diaphram digital control system. ComfortAire claims to be the first to digitize air supply controls for airbeds. The handsets are wired, not wireless, eliminating the need to replace batteries as well as the risk of losing a control unit. Also, the handset for one side of the bed stays on that side, so you are adjusting your own side, not your partner's.
The air support layer is surrounded by a perimeter foam encasement, and beneath is the under-chamber support pad, made of solid soy-based foam. This is to protect against overinflation. ComfortAire recommends placing this mattress on their Foldable Mattress Foundation.
Back to the top, since the air support layer lasts longer than springs or memory foam, the top portion of the ComfortAire Original Comfort oc500 is zippered so components can be removed for cleaning, replacement, or an upgrade. This reduces the cost of upgrading your airbed.
