The Waterbed Replacement is one of two adjustable air mattress models in the Specialty Comfort Collection by ComfortAire, the manufacturers of the original adjustable airbed. Two of its sizes, Queen XL and California King, are the standard sizes for hard side waterbeds. The name of the model also reflects the time when airbeds began to replace waterbeds for fluid support of sleepers. For one thing, waterbeds were susceptible to failures such as leaks and broken baffles. With an air mattress, a leak could lead to loss of support, but it wouldn't soak the floor of your bedroom and everything on it. And a bed with an air mattress is easier to move, since it weighs considerably less. With ComfortAire, the level of support can be adjusted easily, something that's hard to do with waterbeds.
The ComfortAire Waterbed Replacement (WR) is essentially the same as the G13 Horizons in the Genesis Series. ComfortAire actually states on the Specifications page that it is in this collection. A side-by-side comparison of the features shows that they are the same.
Why Waterbed Replacement? This model is marketed to consumers looking to replace their waterbeds. To the fluid support (like that of water), air adds adjustability at any time. The adjustability is not just for the mattress as a whole, but multiple air chambers can be separately controlled to adjust the shape of the support to that of the user.
1. The cover of the Waterbed Replacement is knit bamboo fiber fabric. ComfortAire touts the breathability of this cover, keeping sleepers "cool and fresh."
2. Between the cover and the air support is 3¼" of a proprietary formulated memory foam. Called Evellafoam™, it is scented with green tea extract. Memory foam is sensitive to pressure and body heat. It conforms to contours of the body for evenly distributed support. This relieves pressure on larger body parts, while supporting the smaller profile areas.
3. The support core of the Waterbed Replacement is 6" high air chambers. These are made of 24-ga. cotton-reinforced latex (rubber). There are six of these chambers in a two-person bed, three on each side. Each side of the bed can be adjusted separately, suitable for sleepers with different support needs.
Twin size Waterbed Replacement airbeds are available only with single air chambers (a total of 3). The customer purchasing a Full, Queen or Queen XL mattress has a choice of single or double chambers. The double chambers (6) are for two sleepers. An Eastern King or California King always has double chambers. Even for one sleeper, this works better since a chamber not too wide provides better support than a full-width one.
The air pressure in the chambers is controlled by ComfortAIre's newest air control system, the Q10™ Wireless ACS. This not only comes with new ComfortAire mattresses, but can be purchased to upgrade an older system.
4. Perimeter support for the air chambers and edge support for the sleeping surface are provided by an 8" high foam rail. This Foam Perimeter Support consists of 1.6-lb. density foam.
5. The air chambers are supported and protected on the bottom by a 1" thick base pad of 1.15-lb. base foam.
The Specialty Comfort Waterbed Replacement can be purchased directly from ComfortAire. The company covers this mattress with a 2/25 limited warranty. The first two years are no charge for repairs and replacements. The remaining 23 years are prorated.
