The third mattress collection listed by Corsicana Bedding is the Pocket Springs Collection of innerspring mattresses. One series in that collection, the Elite Opulence Series, is already reviewed on this site.
The core of Corsicana's Pocket Spring mattresses is an array of pocket coils (also called Marshall coils after James Marshall, their inventor). These are independent coils (not tied to each other). They are encased in fabric pockets, and the pockets are fastened to each other, usually in a rectangular grid. Sometimes they are nested: put into a hexagonal grid for greater coil density, such as in an enhanced support zone.
Besides Elite and Opulence, other model/series names for Corsicana Pocket Spring Collection mattresses are Catherine, Fremont, and Auburn. Model names seem to be specific to retailers, but some retailers also note the manufacturer's product number (MPN), which makes it possible to find the same model at different outlets. If more retailers did this, someone finding a mattress model on the website of a retailer in a diffeent region of the country could look for that model in his or her own area.
Coil counts for Queen-size mattresses in the Pocket Springs Collection vary by series. Among the coil counts listed are 460, 644 and 884, which means they vary in gauge, diameter and spacing, perhaps also in the use of packing within the innerspring (not stated in this collection, but some of the Micro Coil Collection models have gel foam between microcoils).
The pocket coil innerspring is fully foam encased. This is to protect and stabilize the coils. It is also to provide edge support for the sleeping surface to counter roll-offs and make the surface 100% usable, even for sitting on the edge.
Cover fabrics and quilting materials also vary by series or model. Among the materials used are organic cotton, batting or quilting fibers and foams. Though not specifically named, polyester fill fibers may be included, since they are commonly used in quilting. Also, neither Corsicana nor retailers detail what fire resistance medium is used. At least some of the covers are tack & jump quilted; some are "ultra plush." Stated quilt thicknesses are 1½ and 2 inches.
Heights of listed Pocket Springs Collection mattresses by Corsicana Bedding range from 9 to 16 inches. Part of this may be accounted for by the heights of various coils. Other factors are the number and thicknesses of the comfort layers and the thickness of the base pad. Overall firmness levels of Pocket Springs Collection models range from Extra Firm to Plush.
The best foundations for pocket coil mattresses in general (including those in this collection) are platforms and adjustable beds as well as slatted boxes (as long as the slats are close enough to each other). Traditional box springs are not usually recommended for this type of mattress, and are usually advised against. Many retailers' "box springs" are really platforms, so check the details before passing on them (if there are no details on the "box spring" then ask).
Pocket Springs Collection mattresses carry a 10-year warranty from Corsicana Bedding, Inc. Year #1 is fully covered, and the remaining 9 are prorated.
