The Octaspring 5500 is the entry level memory foam mattress inb the Octaspring Collection by Dormeo. It is the essential mattress application of the Octaspring, a foam spring developed by Belgian inventor Willy Poppe. Dormeo calls this invention the "True Hybrid" because this one component combines the advantages of both memory foam and springs.
According to Dormeo, altough metal springs allow much more air to flow through than even ventilated foam, keeping the mattress cool and fresh, the springs themselves are a problem. They push back on the sleeper (springs which don't push back won't last very long), and this causes pressure points, etc., causing pain and disturbing sleep. Traditional springs, such as Bonnell coils, continuous coils, and some offset coils, also transfer motion from one side of the bed to the other, so if one sleeping partner moves, the other feels it.
On the other hand, foams don't push back, and memory foam actually conforms to the sleeper's body contours, reducing pressure points and preserving proper spinal posture. But memory foam also accumulates heat. Reformulation and ventilation don't eliminate the heat build-up, they only reduce it. Even adding gel and other heat-conducting materials is limited in its effect.
Octasprings are 8-sided hollow-core columns with a honeycomb structure. These foam springs allow air to flow completely through and around them. Like a spring, the Octaspring compresses under weight. But unlike metal springs, it does not push back harshly. Being memory foam, it holds its depressed position for a while, only rebounding when the weight is removed.
Memory foam itself is conforming, but an array of foam springs is even more so, since each spring responds independently the way pocket coils do.
The Octaspring 5500 has only one layer of Octasprings, and these are all the memory foam MemoryCoils. The layer is zoned for three regions of the body, with the soft (plush) Octasprings in the ends and the medium ones in the middle. This means more support under the heavier center third of the body.
Atop the Octasprings in the 5500 is a 1½" layer of memory foam to smooth out the Octaspring response. Beneath is a 4" support core of Dormeo's Eco-Cell support foam, the same material used to make EcoSprings, the support level Octasprings found in higher level Octaspring mattresses, such as the 6500, 8000, 8500 and 9500.
The foundation for the Octaspring 5500 can be any of Dormeo's divan beds (Venice, Siena or Tiffany), platform (Flat Foundation), or adjustable beds (Infinity or Infinity Deluxe). This mattress is also compatible with European wood slat bases as long as the slats are close enough together. Use of a traditional box spring is not mentioned, but its use with foam beds is generally discouraged. However, many retailers today still call fixed foundations "box springs" even when they are really platforms.
Dormeo covers the Octaspring 5500 mattress with a 90 Night Tryout and a 25-Year Limited Warranty. This model may be purchased on line through Dormeo North America or through a number of retailers in the United States or at Sleep Country in Canada. It is also available from Great Britain to Australia and several points between.
