Dormia Memory Foam 1000

Dormia has helped to pioneer a new type of bed – the affordable memory foam mattress. The Dormia Memory Foam 1000 is a simple design, which uses about 1.5 inches of memory foam placed above a solid foam core, about 5 inches thick, typically made from high resilience polyurethane foam. The Dormia Memory Foam 1000 can ship rolled and compressed, which could save money on shipping. Dormia also offers, through its online retail portal Abed.com, a quick assembly foundation for its mattress, which also ships in a small, UPS friendly package and takes a few minutes to assemble in-home.

With our history of evaluating beds, we have always been somewhat leery of any pure foam mattress which is rolled and compressed. Adding a foundation which would need to be assembled adds to our concern over this sleep system. After a review of the properties of both high resilience polyurethane foam (also called HR, poly, or HR poly) and memory foam, we have determined that on entry level memory foam, and virtually all HR foam, compression is not damaging or restrictive to the bed. Extended periods of compression, such as long term storage in a compressed state, can increase the time it would take for the mattress to “recover” after being unpacked. The offered “5-minute foundation” is a slightly different concern. The foundation is shipped in a small box, and would need to be assembled in-home. The parts are all included, as well as the cover, but if you are not prepared for a “some assembly required” purchase, then you may opt to get your foundation locally, which will reduce the cost from $699.00 for the set to $499.00 for the mattress alone.

Dormia, through their web portal at Abed.com, sells the queen mattress set (including quick-build foundation) for $699.00 plus shipping. Since the bed is shipped UPS (or similar delivery) you can expect a reasonably priced option for standard delivery. Dormia does offer a substantial 25 year warranty, but considering that there are no “hard” components in the mattress, they are really warranting the foam itself. With HR foam and memory foam, the life expectancy may exceed the 25 years offered.

The current Dormia mattress lines are Vista (8"), Savannah (10"), Sonata (12"), and Dolce (14").
