Dream Bed, with its two models, was released by Mattress Firm, a chain of retail bedding stores, in the Fall of 2015. Mattress Firm was already taking orders for some mattresses and shipping them directly to customers. But the Dream Bed brand is only ordered online, compressed, rolled and packed into a cardboard box, and shipped by UPS or FedEx. This competes directly with start-up mattress companies such as Lull, Yogabed, and Tuft & Needle.
The two Dream Bed models are Original Dream Bed and Cool Dream Bed. The differences between the two are deeper than soft, medium and firm. They are distiguished by their height and composition.
Original Dream Bed is a latex-memory foam hybrid, combining the qualities of a latex mattress and a memory foam mattress. This 10" high mattress has three layers. The 7" support core of high density base foam is topped by a 1˝" top layer of latex and a 1˝" middle layer of memory foam. The cover of this mattress is woven fabric, a contrast with the knit covers of most foam mattresses.
Available at a slightly higher price is the Cool Dream Bed. Like the Original, it has a woven cover, but beneath that is the difference. This is a 10˝" high mattress (more like 10⅝ as we'll see). The base foam support core is 7˝" high, topped by a 3" comfort layer of memory foam, thus far a typical memory foam mattress.
On top of the memory foam in the Cool Dream Bed is a ⅛" layer of gel. Not just any gel, but one of phase change materials. Beyond cooling, this gel engages in temperature egulation. It can release heat when the bed is too cool as well as absorbing heat when too warm.
Three foundations are recommended for Dream Bed mattresses: box springs (really slatted box bases), adjustable beds, and any flat surface (platform beds, the floor, etc.).
Coupled with purchasing the Dream Bed mattreses is Mattress Firm's “Dream it Forward” program. This is keyed as "We give back." For every Dream Bed sold, the company give charitable partners a bed for the homeless.
Dream Bed mattresses are covered by a 180-night sleep trial period.
