This Ultimate Dreams mattress certainly lives up to its name–Total Latex is an all-latex mattress. It is the high-end model in DreamFoam Bedding's Latex Mattresses collection. It is sold on Amazon as well as through the DreamFoam Bedding website.
The lack of petroleum-based polyurethane foam and memory foam in the mattress interior is coupled with a wool FR layer in producing a mattress free of harmful chemicals.
Another advertised feature of this 10" latex mattress attractive to consumers is the choice of comfort levels when making the purchase. The selection is among seven levels of firmness from a scale of 1-10 (all but levels 2, 4 and 9). This is determined by the firmness of the 3" blended Talalay latex comfort layer and that of the 6" high-density latex support core.
According to DreamFoam Bedding, the default support core foam is 36 ILD Talalay latex. Other choices are 32 ILD Talalay latex (less firm) and natural Dunlop latex (more firm).
The advantages of latex include being anti-microbial, anti-fungal, resistant to dust mites, and hypoallergenic (although this is challenged by Naturepedic). It is also highly resilient, lifting the sleeper up (contrasted with sinking into memory foam), and it is breathable and cooler (not building up heat like memory foam).
Latex is also more durable than memory foam and most polyurethane foam. However, it is more sensitive to moisture. Talalay latex is formed with vertical pores, allowing air to flow through. This not only keeps the foam cooler, it allows moisture to evaporate, keeping the inside dry.
The fabric in the cover of the Ultimate Dreams Total Latex mattress is not specified as to whether it is rayon, cotton, polyester or something else. It is quilted, with a non-chemical, non-toxic wool fire resistant layer. It is also zippered so the comfort layer can be exchanged to adjust the comfort level (there is a fee for this).
Brooklyn Bedding's foundation, the Simple Life Box Foundation may be purchased with the Ultimate Dreams Total Latex. DreamFoam Bedding also sells an adjustable bed, the S-Cape by Leggett & Platt.
