Elgin Firm and Elgin Pillowtop
The
Elgin Firm and
Elgin Pillowtop are mattresses in the
Summerhill & Bischop mattress collection by
Ortho Mattress, Inc. (O-M), a mattress manufacturer and retailer in Southern California. These are innerspring mattresses with hand-nested coils. The comfort layers above the innerspring support core are made of latex and gel-infused memory foam.
The coils in the innerspring support cores of the
Summerhill & Bischop Elgin Firm and
Elgin Pillowtop mattresses are "hand-nested." They are individually wrapped and set in place by hand, a process used by a select number of innerspring mattress manufacturers, especially those in the high-end market. This allows each coil to respond to the weight placed directly upon it. Individual response tailors the support of the mattress to reduce pressure points and the pain & soreness they cause.
Besides contouring the sleeper's body more faithfully, this minimizes motion transfer, reducing the chances that one sleeper's movements will disturb the other. For several mattress producers, this has become an advertized feature.
The comfort layers of the
Elgin Firm and
Elgin Pillowtop are gel memory foam and latex foam. The latex is a quick response foam, rebounding essentially immediately when weight is lifted. This high resiliency adds to the support of the coils while providing a measure of softness, firm yet cushiony.
The latex foam is topped with gel-infused memory foam in the
Ortho Mattress Summerhill & Bischop Elgin Firm and
Elgin Pillowtop mattresses. The memory foam conforms to the user's body, responding to heat and pressure. Memory foam is a slow response material, taking from 15 to 30 seconds to return to its original configuration. The infused gel is there to act as a heat sink, carrying body heat away from the sleeping surface for a cooling effect. It also moderates the support properties of the memory foam.
The edge support for the
O-M mattresses is "Solid State Edge Support." Unfortunately,
Ortho Mattress does not provide any details other than the term itself on its website. And getting this information from retailers is futile, since these mattresses are sold exclusively through
Ortho Mattress's own stores. This manufacturer is also light on information about its materials, except to say their foam is "low emission", the latex is "all-natural" (is it Talalay or Dunlop?), the memory foam is "gel-infused" (swirled? or microencapsulated? or??). They say they meet federal fire retardant guidelines (how?).
The heights for the
Elgin Firm and
Elgin Pillowtop are not listed on the
Ortho Mattress website, but judging from the photos of these factory-direct mattresses (assuming they are on the 9" foundation), the
Firm is 11" and the
Pillowtop 12".
The preferred foundation for the
Elgin Firm and
Elgin Pillowtop mattresses, according to the
O-M descriptions, is either a platform or an adjustable bed. Platforms come either 9" or 5" high. These mattresses hold a 10-year non-prorated warranty.
