One of the two newest series of Englander mattresses is Lifestyle. The company says, "Better sleep for every life stage — We support them all." Their claim is, "This revolutionary new mattress line is designed to support every type of lifestyle no matter what life stage you are in." What Englander promises is a "Comfortable, Cooler Sleep Experience."
Although the support core is foam, these may be called hybrid specialty mattresses, because there is an encased pocket coil layer (actually microcoils) near the top. Individual models and precise specifications are not listed on the company website, but they do have features common to this series and a cutaway illustration:
~ Upholstered cover with air flow technology
~ Gel-infused memory foam
~ Micro-encased coils
~ Reticulated high-density memory foam
~ Medium foam core
~ Foam "racetrack" edge support
The Englander site does not say so, but from their cutaway view of the Lifestyle Collection mattress, the "upholstered cover" appears to be quilted, most likley with fire blocking fibers and either quilting fibers or quilting foam. The mesh to foster air flow is easily seen around mattress just below the bottom edge of the top cover, positoned around the microcoil layer and the two foam layers beneath it.
The top comfort layer is gel-infused memory foam. Memory foam is used because of its conformity. Gel is added both to make the memory foam more supportive and to cool it. Since memory foam tends to collect and build up heat, the gel is used to draw heat away to dissipate. An apparent typo on the Englander page refers to "Thousands of gell cells that are infused with memory foam."
The encased microcoil layer is also conforming (see the blog article on coil types). Coils are also cooler, since air flows through them freely. Placing this layer just under the gel memory foam provides an interface where heat can dissipate and be carried out of the mattress. The actual height of this microcoil layer is not given, but that depends on the exact model. However, most microcoils range from 1½ to 4 inches in height.
Just beneath the micocoils in the Englander Lifestyle Series mattresses is a layer of "reticulated" memory foam. "Reticulated" means that it has the same formulation (ratio of ingredients) as regular memory foam, but it is processed to expand the cell so it won't absorb moisture, even though water can flow through. The intent is to have the conformability of memory foam without moisture retention.
According to the illustration, the next layer down is soft foam. What kind of foam is not stated in the legend, but the description lists latex among the layers, indicating that this may be soft latex. Latex is valued for its resiliency, and this layer appears to be a transition to the support core. The support core in the Lifestyle is called "medium." This may mean the firmness level, but I tend to think that unlikely, since most support foams are high density and firm or ultra firm.
Around the support core of the Englander Lifestyle mattress is a foam encasement referred to by the company as "race track edging." This is edge support for the support core and the whole mattress. This and the support core appear to be about 7-8 inches high, but the illustration is not intended to be an exact representation of dimensions, since these depend on the model.
For more specific details on Lifestyle models and warranties, visit or contact an Englander dealer. The company's webste has a Dealer Locator page with phone numbers and email addresses for different regions of the country. When looking for Englander Lifestyle dealers on line, be aware that at least one other manufacturer has mattresses labeled "Lifetyle," and there is a company called "Lifestyle Solutions."
Englander has revised the three models in its Lifestyle Collection of specialty hybrid mattresses. The principal revision is in the covers. Cover fabrics are now woven and have a finish of Thermo-Gel, which is designed to enhance cooling. This puts gel at the surface, supplementing the gel-infused foams in the upper comfort layers. Not only this, but the covers have a waterfall design.
The Lifestyle Collection has three models. Two have gel-infused memory foam in the top layer. The high luxury third model has gel-infused latex at the top.
The rest of the mattress remains the same, with a high-density polyurethane foam support base under a layer of reticulated foam. Between the reticulated foam and the top comfort layer is a layer of wrapped microcoils.
