Alpine Classic

European Sleep Works calls the Alpine Classic "Our original European-style mattress." This innerspring mattress model, formerly named Alpine, has been updated since it was introduced 15 years ago. ESW further compares it with the Latex Classic (ESW's original latex mattress), saying it has "A livelier dynamic."

What makes the "dynamic" of the Alpine Classic "livelier" is the support core of European coils. About 6 to 6½ inches high, the pocket coils are more responsive. With their individual respone, these coils would be more conforming than any foam support core, including latex. This means more pressure relief, which was the reason James Marshall invented this coil system about 1900.

The coils allow more air to flow through, making this cooler than an all-foam mattress. They also make the mattress lighter, which should make it easier to handle, including rotating it. In the eploded view, the 1,200 pocket coils appear to be nested (in a hexagonal/honeycomb pattern). This maximizes coil density for more even support.

The pocket coil array is topped with a 2" thick layer of Talalay latex. This is Vita Talalay, made in the Netherlands by Radium Foam. It is more breathable than Dunlop latex, the original type of latex foam. As to composition, this latex is all-natural, meaning that it is made from the sap of the rubber tree (Helvea brasiliensis). Latex foam is resilient (or bouncy–latex used to be called foam rubber). It is also resistant to dust mites, fungi, and other undesirable micro-organisms.

The Alpine Classic by European Sleep Works is covered with organic natural materials. Organic cotton stretch knit is channel-quilted to Merino wool. Besides cushioning, the wool is flame resistant. This enables the mattress to meet federal flammability guidelines without the use of toxic chemicals.

A similar model, the Alpine HDM, adds a layer of European High Density Microcoils.

The preferred foundation for the Alpine Classic is the ESW base of european wood slats. The slats can be adjusted to customize the shape of the support. This model may also be used on platform beds and adjustable beds.

The customer has a choice from among four firmness levels for the Alpine Classic. It carries a 10-year warranty from European Sleep Works.
