Latex Classic

The Latex Classic mattress by European Sleep Works (ESW) is an updated version of their 8" All-Latex model. It still has the same thicknesses of the layers and the same cover. But they differ in the compositon of the support cores in these latex mattresses.

The 6" support core of the All-Latex and the Latex Classic are both very firm latex. In the earlier model it was Dunlop latex, the original latex foam. The Dunlop process produces very durable latex foam, But the pour-and-set processing allows settling, leaving the block of foam firmer on the bottom and softer on the top, a quality preferred in some applications.

In the Latex Classic the support core consists of Talalay latex. This is a more expensive process than Dunlop, but it produces a more even consistency in the foam. Also, Talalay latex is more breathable than Dunlop, a distinct advantage for use in mattresses. An article on the ESW blog explains how a mattress can help with breathing, which includes the mattress itself being breathable.

The comfort layer in both Latex Classic and All-Latex is a 2" of soft Talalay latex. ESW doesn't specify the firmness of this latex, other than it is softer than latex in the support core. They do say that the Latex Classic mattress is "Available in a range of firmness options," which means that the firmness is variable in this layer. Medium firm and softer latex foam is both conforming (a rival to memory foam), for pressure relief and lumbar support, and is resilient.

Besides pressure relief, latex foam also does not transfer motion from one side of the bed to the other, so that one sleeper's movement does not disturb the other.

The Latex Classic is an all-natural mattress. The latex is made from rubber tree sap, and the cover is also made of natural materials. The cover fabric is stretch-knit organic cotton. It is quilted with Merino wool. The compressed wool is a naturally fire resistant, negating the need for chemicals. thus, no PBDE or phthalates.
