Latex II HDM

The Latex II HDM is the newest model by European Sleep Works. ESW calls it, "Our most sophisticated and luxurious natural latex mattress." It, along with another new model, the Calico HDM, are also the company's highest-priced mattresses.

The HDM at the end of the names of four current European Sleep Works models stands for High Definition Microcoils. By the way, ESW distinguishes between microcoils and minicoils, with microcoils being smaller. The Latex II HDM, Nordic HDM and Calico HDM have both, while Apline HDM has only the microcoils. These models can best be labeled latex-microcoil hybrid mattresses.

A rough analogy of the construction of the Latex II HDM is a club sandwich with latex for the bread, and microcoils and minicoils for the fillings. The support core and the two foam comfort layers are Talalay latex.

The support core of the Latex II HDM is 6" of HD Talalay latex. This is the same as in the Latex Classic, providing underlyng support for the whole mattress and the sleeper.

Above the support core are 1,000 European Posture-Fill minicoils, about 1½" to 2" high. These add more pressure-relieving conformity to the latex. The open spaces in and between the coils also increase airflow for ventilation and cooling.

Above the minicoils in the Latex II HDM is a 1" comfort layer of natural Talalay latex. Another 1" layer is atop the microcoils. These bring the total thickness of latex to 8" in this mattress. The firmness of the latex in these layers is variable, determined by the desired overall comfort level of the mattress (four levels are available).

A thin layer of 2,000 High-Definition Microcoils is between the two latex comfort layers. These very small coils, which appear to be ¾" high, continue the conformity of the latex and the minicoils. But that is not all. According to the Sleep Works Blog, "The coils give the mattress strength and stability."

The cover of the Latex II HDM is the same as on the Latex Classic, organic cotton stretch knit and Merino wool.

The default foundation for the Latex II HDM is the Flexible Slats base made by ESW. This mattress is also compatible with platform beds. Traditional box springs are not recommended for this type of mattress.

The Latex II HDM can be found at the European Sleep Works Store in Berkeley, California. The sleep trial is for 60 days, and the warranty for 10 years.
