The Oxygen Pillow is the most widely distributed current product of European Sleep Works (ESW), a mattress, bedding and furniture manufacturer in Berkeley, California. It and the companion Sleep Wedge are carried by stores selling products by Berkeley Ergonomics, a spin-off from ESW. It is only natural that companies producing mattresses designed for healthy sleep also make pillows for the same reason.
This is called the Oxygen Pillow (O2) because it is engineered to promote good breathing, hence more oxygen in the sleeper's body. It does this by properly positioning the head, by being itself breathable, and by avoiding allergenic and toxic ingredients. European Sleep Work's tagline for the O2 Pillow is "Deeper Sleep through Deeper Breathing."
European Sleep Works calls attention to the many ways people try to adjust their pillows, such as stacking them, folding them or rolling them up, etc. They say this is a sign that the pillows are inadequate for proper neck posture and head elevation. A pillow may also be too hard or too soft. Here we should note that ancient beds often came with head supports, built-in, attached or self-standing, a recognition of the importance of proper positioning of the head. This is the primary function of a pillow.
The main components of the Oxygen Pillow are all natural products: natural latex and organic cotton. Also added to this is Bioneem, an extract from neem tree seeds, to block the breeding of dust mites.
Latex is a resilient foam made from rubber tree sap. It does not sink in under body heat as memory foam does. It is also more durable, not going flat. It is naturally anti-microbial and anti-fungal. Properly washed after processing, it is hypoallergenic, although some firms, like Naturepedic, claim that there may enough latex sap proteins left to trigger allergic reactions in some people.
The latex is fashioned in a patented three-layer design. The top and bottom layers have lateral cuts to hold the head in place while supporting the neck. The middle layer has a hollow core. In all three layers, the latex is vertically perforated for airflow.
The latex can be fitted to the customer, with a total of 13 heights and firmnesses. This is based on body features such as shoulder width. neck length, head size, sleeping position, and weight. The goal is to keep the neck properly aligned so as to not pinch the throat and the nasal passages.
The cover of the Oxygen Pillow is made of organic cotton, meaning that there should be no residues of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Cotton is breathable, as is the latex, not suffocating the sleeper. Since the latex does not sink in, it keeps the nose in the open for easier breathing.
The Oxygen Pillow is often paired with the Sleep Wedge by European Sleep Works. This wedge is designed to provide a gentle incline, not too high as many wedges do. ESW claims that the Sleep Wedge, together with the Oxygen Pillow, relieves sleep apnea, makes back and side sleeping comfortable, and provides "dryer sleep." The Wedge is 4" high at the thick end. The top 1" is a layer that can be removed, making the wedge adjustable.
Like the Oxygen Pillow, the Sleep Wedge is made of natural latex and covered with organic cotton. The pillow and the wedge are each available in two sizes, half-queen and half-king.
None of the websites listed the warranty period, so it seems to be the same 10-year period as for the mattresses. The Oxygen Pillow and the Sleep Wedge are available at the European Sleep Works store and at Berkeley Ergonomics retailers.
