Helix Sleep is one of several new bedding manufacturers with one mattress — one mattress, that is, with a difference. Helix Sleep says they sell "Personalized mattresses for unprecedented comfort." This one mattress is not the same mattress for each customer, though the cutaway view would be the same for each. It has the same components with the same thicknesses for the four layers, but the properties of the layers are customized for each user. First, let's see how this mattress is built.
The Helix Mattress has a 2" top comfort layer of Dunlop latex. I don't know why they chose the Dunlop process instead of Talalay, but it is the less costly process. However, it does appear to be ventilated for air flow. The range of the ILD for this layer is from 15 to 32.
Microcoils comprise the next comfort layer. These very short (1½") pocket coils are conforming. The coil array resists the sagging associated with foams. Added benefits are the lighter weight and greater airflow as compared with layers of foam. The ILD of these coils is 18.
The third comfort layer and the base layer (support core) are both high density poly foam (polyurethane), but the bottom one is, as can be expected, definitely firmer. The ILD of the 2" poly foam comfort layer is in the 20 to 26 range with a 1.8 pcf (lbs. per cubic foor). The support core is 4½" high, 1.5 pcf, and 26 to 33 ILD.
The mattress is covered by a fabric blending rayon and polyester. This cover has a zipper, so it can be removed and washed.
How is this mattress personalized? When you get online with Helix Sleep, the second tab at the top right says, "Customize Now." You will be brought to this same page by "Shop Now" and "Order Now" buttons on the site. This begins a 3-step process: you fill out a questionaire, Helix custom-makes your mattress, and it is shipped to you.
The questionaire first asks for the customer's name (names if it is a couple). Factors determining the parameters of the mattress include age, gender, height, weight, body type, sleeping style, firmness preference, current mattress, and sleep experience. It also includes the area of the country, since persons in different regions describe the same firmness level differently (How firm is firm?).
If the couple wants dual comfort, for $100 they can have each side of the mattress personalized separately. An algorithm programmed into Helix Sleep's computers uses the results of the questionaire to design the mattress.
Customers in the New York City area can go to the Helix Sleep showroom on 4th Street in SoHo. There they can get fitted for a mattress.
The mattress is assembled according the the plan, compressed, packaged and shipped to the customer in 7 to 10 days.
The Helix Sleep Mattress is available in six sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King and CA King. As to the foundation, Helix Sleep says, "We built our bed to work on a variety of foundations to suit your needs." These include platform beds, metal grids, slatted bases, box springs, and the floor. Presumably, though not named, this would also include adjustable beds.
Helix Sleep has a 100-night sleep trial. The warranty is for 10 years.
