The Natural Response EcoHybrid Collection mattresses are not to be confused with the older Natural Response models. The older ones were dual-core innerspring mattresses with latex top and bottom and two layers of coils. The new collection consists of specialty hybrids. The EcoHybrid combines latex with other foams, with polyurethane foam support cores. Two of the four models also have memory foam. Essentially, these are latex mattresses, with some containing memory foam.
In keeping with the ecologically friendly theme, King Koil labels all the foams other than latex in this collection as "bio-based" (natural latex is bio-based by definition, of course). However, the company does not specify the plant sources (though their EcoGel memory foam is "soy-based"), nor does it specify the process (Magniflex claims to use a water-based instead of oil-based process). All of the Natural Response ECOhybrid mattresses have a support core of Bio-Based Perfect Foam (plant-based version of high density polyurethane foam).
There are four models in the Natural Response ECOhybrid Collection listed by King Koil: Natural Response ECO hybrid PLUSH (id2), Natural Response ECO hybrid FIRM (id4), Natural Response ECO hybrid Plush Pillow Top (id1), and Natural Response ECO hybrid FIRM Pillow Top (id3). The heights of these mattresses range from 12½ to 15 inches, with the pillowtop mattresses being the highest. King Koil posts the Sleep ID (id# = comfort level) for each mattress, on a 5-point scale with 1 the softest.
As with the original Natural Response brand, "natural response" refers to the inherent resiliency of latex foam (aka "foam rubber"). Latex is always at the top of these mattresses, even when memory foam is also present. Why? According to King Koil, this offers "the conforming comfort of memory foam but without the deep sinking feeling."
The latex in the EcoHybrid mattresses comes in five materials: Conform Latex, Cushion Firm Conform Latex, Firm Conform Latex, Memory Foam Latex Combo Topper, Enhanced Cushion Firm Conform Latex Topper. The first three are the kinds used in the comfort layers of this collection. It is natural latex, made from rubber tree sap. King Koil does not say whether it is blended with a little synthetic latex or not. The other forms of latex are used in toppers (pillow tops). One of these has the latex back-to-back with memory foam.
The Natural Response ECO hybrid PLUSH (id2), the second softest in this series, has one layer of Conform Latex with a layer of Bio-Based Memory Foam.
The Natural Response ECO hybrid FIRM (id4) is the firmest model in this collection. The top layer is Cushion Firm Conform Latex, and the second layer Firm Conform Latex.
The Natural Response ECO hybrid Plush Pillow Top (id1), the softest model, has the Memory Foam Latex Combo Topper. Beneath this pillow top, it has the same materials as the first model, but with an additional memory foam layer on top of the latex.
The second firmest EcoHybrid model is the Natural Response ECO hybrid FIRM Pillow Top (id3). It is like the second model, but with a pillow top, which is the Enhanced Cushion Firm Conform Latex Topper.
The fabric in the cover of the mattresses in the Natural Response EcoHybrid Collection is not named, but if it is cotton, then that would be in line with using natural and organic ingredients (this collection was touted as organic in a news article). Quilting is not mentioned; the photos show smooth tops, meaning they are not quilted. Not named either is the method of fire resistance to meet federal flammability standards.
This collection is rather new. It is hard to find retailers carrying it right now. The next year will tell how it is accepted in the marketplace.
