Kingsdown says, "It's the coolest bed in the world." The Blu-Tek mattresses were designed to be cool to help people sleep more restfully. Dr. Robert Oexman, Director of Kingsdown's Sleep to Live® Institute says, "A mattress that builds heat disrupts the natural fall of core body temperature, negatively impacting sleep and wellness. Blu-Tek™ allows your core body temperature to decrease naturally."
Blu-Tek Mattresses take advantage of what Kingsdown calls "Cool Support Technology™ and our Progressive Support System.™"
Cool Support Technology
In its search for providing cooler sleep, Kingsdown's Sleep to Live Institute developed structural features in the materials of the foam mattresses to promote both horizontal and verticl airflow. These include channels in the comfort and support layers and pinholes in the edge-supporting perimeter foam. On top of this, the cover is permeable, allowing air to flow into and out of the mattress at the surface. This not only cools the mattress and the sleeepers, it also keeps the mattress ventilated for longer freshness.
Progressive Support System
The Progressive Support System, the 6.5" ProSupport Engineered Core, features two support layers, the ProSupport™ and the ProSupport™ Plus. These support foams are channeled to enhance the airflow while permitting them to respond more individually to different parts of the sleeper's body. Becoming progressively firmer in the lower layers is to provide necessary support without compromising the conformity of the top layer, combining comfort and support. The Foam Edge Rail is there to provide edge-to-edge, full-surface support, making the entire sleeping surface usable, even for sitting on the edge.
Back to the comfort layer, it can be made in any of several foams or combinations of them: gel, visco, latex, gel/visco, gel/latex, gel/visco/latex, or luxurious (super soft) foam. These foams are stuructured in a way that permits air to circulate through them, reducing the build up of heat from the sleepers' bodies. The actual layering of the comfort layer varies by model. Under the center of the comfort layer is the Gel Lumbar Support Layer, to better support the lower back.
At the bottom of a Blu-Tek mattress is the Foundation Support Layer of very firm base support foam, which sits directly on the base. Altogether, this is to give stable support to the mattress. A very firm bottom layer does mor than hold up the mattress. It also holds down the sides, keeping the foam mattress from curling up, which is one reason why foam mattresses in general have very firm base layers.
There are several models of Kingsdown Blu-Tek mattresses. Some of the names of them are Glacier, Arctic, Peak, Winter, Polar, and Ice. A few are described individually on the Kingsdown website, but all on retailers' sites, of which there are several. A search for Kingsdown Blu-Tek (or "BluTek") will lead you to a number of retailers carrying Blu-Tek mattresses. Adding one of the model names to the search will bring you more specific results, making it more likely you will find retailers carrying these mattresses close to you.
