ComfortAire and Sleep Number built their business on airbeds, which are still their primary products. A number of mainstream mattress manufacturers now have models with air support. Among these are Simmons, Tempur-Pedic and Kingsdown. Mattresses in Kingsdown's BodyPerfect Collection are airbeds.
The key to comfort in airbeds is the means of adjusting pressure to achieve suitable support levels. Sleep Number (the market name of Select Comfort) is named for the ability of two sleepers to select the support/comfort level for each side of the bed. Zoning of support in innerspring and foam mattresses to optimize support for areas of the body is used by many manufacturers, with different coil gauges and/or densities or variations in foam firmness.
Airbeds may have air as the primary support, or they may use air to adjust the support level in a hybrid of an airbed with an innerspring mattress, a memory foam mattress, or a latex mattress. A BodyPerfect mattress is an airbed-innerspring hybrid.
The BodyPerfect Collection has the same basic principle design as another Kingsdown collection, Sleep Smart. They both have pocket coil innersprings with air pressure support adjustment. A comparison of the descriptions reveals that BodyPerfect has more features than Sleep Smart.
Several current airbeds zone support with multiple air chambers adjusted to different pressures. BodyPerfect mattresses have 21 chambers on each side of the bed (21 in a Twin, 42 in a Queen). These are grouped into 6 zones. The air pressure in each zone can be adjusted to customize support for the individual user.
The touted advantage of the BodyPerfect Collection by Kingsdown goes beyond just adjustment. They call their system "Pro-active air technology." What this means is that the computerized controls monitor and adjust the pressures for more than maintaining certain settings, but for individualized comfort, even as the sleeper becomes more or less comfortable. This is based on the "intuitive mattress" detecting the sleeper's comfort by monitoring sleep habits. Two keys to this are the sensors and the App. Let's begin with the App.
The BodyPerfect mattress comes with a Bluetooth enabled tablet that has an Android OS and the BodyPerfect App. Default setting are determined scientifically. The users can input how comfortable they have been during the night. They can also self-determine settings. The computer then recalculates settings. There are also special settings for a number of physical and medical conditions.
Sensors in the mattress detect movements, temperature, etc. during sleep, compiling and comparing data over time. This data indicates how well the user is sleeping and at what settings. The mattress then makes adjustments, even very small ones, to optimize sleep.
The control system for BodyPerfect mattresses also includes alarms and alerts for each user. These use any of several means to alert the sleeper: sound, physical sensations, visual stimuli.
Kingsdown has posted comparisons of BodyPerfect Collection and Sleep Smart Collection mattresses with four competitors' adjustable air models: Sleep Number® x12 with Sleep IQ (X12), Tempur-Pedic® TEMPUR-Choice Luxe (TCL), and Simmons® Comforpedic IQ (CIQ). On both comparison lists, the only features shared by competitors were dual controls (X12 and TCL) and adjustable base compatible (X12, TCL and CIQ).
Edge support in BodyPerfect mattresses is supplied by a high-density foam encasement. The foam rail is ventilated for a cooler mattress.
Kingsdown BodyPefect mattresses are compatible with adjustable beds and platform beds. They also work with other foundations that offer the same level of support.
Mattresses in the BodyPerfect Collection are covered by a 10-year warranty from Kingsdown.
