Downton Abbey is a television drama series originating in England and broadcast on British television in the United Kingdom, on PBS in the United States, and many other places around the world. Downton Abbey Home is a line of home furnishings and decor inspired by the series. As of mid-2015, this includes mattresses made under license by Kingsdown, a bedding manufacturer based in North Carolina. Mattresses in this collection will be sold in the United States, Canada, and several other (mostly Commonwealth) countries. One reason Kingsdown was chosen is its international presence in manufacturing and marketing.
With a 3-star beginning price, even entry-level models in the Downton Abbey Home Collection are considered luxury mattresses. This collection is structured in three series at three ties, which are described as Entry Level, Mid-Level and High End.
For now, all the Downton Abbey Home models are innerspring mattresses with individually wrapped pocket coils for support (though it is not stated in words, the cutaway for an Entry Level tier model (Country Living II) appears to show offset coils, which are second only to pocket coils for conformity). The styling is distinct for each series. For instance, border fabric in the six-model Entry Level tier is houndstooth, and lace is featured in the three-model Mid-Level, with the addition of leather in the four-model High End. Materials used in Downton Abbey mattresses include gel memory foam, latex foam, wool and silk. Kingsdown names coil-on-coil construction as adding to comfort in support. The two cutaways they posted, evidently from the first two tiers, do not show this, so it appears that this feature is reserved for the High End models.
Pocket coils are selected for their conformity. This provides evenly distributed support to relieve pressure on large body parts (for instance, the hips) and to support recessed areas (such as the lower back). Two layers of pocket coils accentuates this effect. This conformity is cooler than that of memory foam, which tends to build up heat, becoming too warm for many people, and interfering with quality sleep.
The coils are also zoned, with firmer support in the middle, under the heaviest portion of the body. Additionally, a section of gel-infused memory foam is placed for lumbar support.
Kingsdown places firmer coils around the perimeter of the innerspring for better support at the edge. Outside of this is Kingsdown's Full Body Surround® Edge Support, which holds the coils in place while supporting the edge of the sleeping surface. The high density foam rail is channel-cut for cooling airflow.
Just under the cover of Downton Abbey Home mattresses is a fiber cushioning layer. Among the fibers are wool and silk. These natural fibers regulate the temperaatre of the sleeping surface with a combination of breathability, insulation, and wicking moisture. Wool itself also has cushioning properties.
Entry Level mattresses have convoluted foam beneath the top layer of cushioning fibers. This provides additional pressure relief and motion isolation.
The other tiers have latex foam. Latex is used for its resiliency, providing a lift to the sleepers, even as other materials wrap them. Latex is also resistant to a number of bedding banes: mold, mildew, bacteria, and dust mites. When thoroughly rinsed after curing, latex is generally hypoallergenic.
Memory foam infused with gel is used in some models as a comfort layer. This is cushioning and contouring which is more supportive. Also, with gel it is cooler, at least during the initial period of sleep.
The Downton Abbey Home Collection of mattresses was introduced at the 2015 Summer Market in Las Vegas (in early August), so it is not in as many showrooms now (in September) as it will be later on.
