Kingsdown Sleep Smart
The
Sleep Smart bed was unveiled at an industry show in January 2013 as a new concept in adjustable mattresses. Using data from research at the
Sleep to Live Institute,
Kingsdown has developed an "intelligently" adjusting bed. According to the company, "ONLY THIS BED STAYS AWAKE while you comfortably, soundly sleep."
Sleep Smart is a system which measures the impact of the user lying on the bed: weight, position, pressure points, movements, etc. It then adjusts support in different parts of the mattress to optimize settings for the sleeper. The user can use an app to enter information, such as where the aches and discomfort are. There are two
Sleep Smart models,
Intuitive and
Progeny. The
Intuitive is the more sophisticated model.
Sleep Smart Intuitive utilizes an array of technologically advanced componenets and processes, including S.M.A.R.T. sensors which automatically measure data points, such as movements and positions, and adjust settings. The body is measured in six zones. The data is visualized on a graphic display.
Intuitive is Bluetooth integrated, so it can be connected to the user's mobile device. The user then can see the display via an app and interact with the
Sleep Smart, customizing the adjustments.
Sleep Smart Progeny is based on the same science as
Intuitive, but applies it somewhat differently.
Progeny focuses more on posture. It senses what the proper posture is for its user. It also enables the use of manual controls for a more personalized sleeping experience. It has a comfort layer corresponding to the user's body type. This model has three support zones which are controlled independently. The primary function of the
Progeny is pain relief and quality of sleep.
A
Sleep Smart system collects data over time and develops a profile of the user's sleep habits, sleep efficiency, etc. This way the
Sleep Smart also adjusts to the user's lifestyle, changes in physical conditions, and so forth.
Kingsdown refers to the
Sleep Smart system as "active response technology." They say it "knows your body." The control unit is called the
Care Center, and it senses where the user may have discomfort or pain.
What is the means of support used in the
Sleep Smart bed? The
Kingsdown site does not specify the medium, but the adjustability sounds like air support. Whatever the support medium is, the real story is the employment of scientific sleep research and computerized controls technology to enhance sleep. If this works as advertised, look for other mattress manufacturers to try to duplicate it.
