Kingsdown Tradition Collection (2015)

In 2013, Kingsdown created a new collection, the Tradition Collection. The models in this series are luxury mattresses at luxury prices. The name Tradition harkens back to the first Kingsdown innerspring mattresses (when the company was Mebane Bedding Company and their leading mattress was called Kingsdown). The name refers to the tradition of hand-crafted quality, using premium materials.

The introduction of the Tradition Collection reflects renewed consumer interest in luxury mattresses, after a decline following the 2008 Recession. Tradition mattresses stress luxury styling as well as luxury construction. The construction of these models is designed for durability so that the luxury price of the mattress is spread out over a longer period of time. The features of Tradition Collection mattresses include Traditional Two-sided Construction, Luxurious Natural Fibers, Open-coil Innerspring, Luxurious Latex Foam, Full Body Surround® Edge Support, and Flexatron® Cushioning Layer.

Descriptions of mattresses in the Tradition Collection may vary by retailer, because one tradition is the customization of mattress models for specific retailers or retail groups. For instance, one retailer calls this group the Legacy Collection.

Traditional Two-sided Construction

The first models in the Tradition Collection were one-sided (no-flip) mattresses. At the 2015 Winter Las Vegas Market, Kingsdown added two-sided models to the collection. This reflects a trend of renewed interest in flippable mattresses. Being two-sided prolongs the life of the mattress. In Kingsdown's words: "Tradition mattresses feature two-sided construction for long lasting comfort and support. This construction technique extends the life of each sleep set, so you can enjoy this time-honored sleep experience even longer."

Luxurious Natural Fibers

Nautural fibers predominate in Kingsdown's Tradition Collection mattresses. These include cotton, Joma wool, silk, and cashmere. These fibers appear in the covers and in cushioning.

Open-coil Innerspring

Open coils are those not individually enclosed. These inlude Bonnell coils, offset coils and continuous coils. Neither Kingsdown nor retailers say which kind of open coils are used in the Tradition Collection models. An open coil innerspring is usually held together as a unit by perimeter rods at the top and the bottom. This makes them ideal for two-sided mattresses. Bonnell coils are the least expensive and continuous coils the most durable. Offset coils are the preferred open coils for premium mattresses since they are more conforming than either Bonnell or continuous coils, and they are more durable than Bonnells, so they are the most likely coils used in the Tradition Collection. However, one retailer refers to "wrapped coil units," but the mattresses were Handley models, and Handley is a separate collection as of January 2015.

Full Body Surround® Edge Support

The innerspring is surrounded by Kingsdown's Full Body Surround® Edge Support, a foam encasement. Not only does this support the edge of the sleeping surface, but it is channeled to foster air flow for ventilation. Ventilation is needed not only for cooling, but to keep moisture from accumulating on the coils.

Luxurious Latex Foam

Latex foam (formerly called "foam rubber") is the original foam cushioning material. It is resilient, hypoallergenic, and resistant to microbes and fungi. Natural latex does not have the off-gassing problems of polyurethane foams. Even synthetic latex has less odor and offgassing. And latex is more durable than memory foam. The resilience means less likelihood of permanent body impressions.

Flexatron® Cushioning Layer

Flexatron is cushioning composed of several materials. This includes fibers of silk, wool and cotton. Natural fibers such as cotton, and wool were the oldest mattress padding materials.

According to Kingsdown, all their mattresses "are carefully constructed by highly-skilled craftsmen who share ownership in the company. So when they embroider the Kingsdown name on each sleep set, it's their name, and it carries more than 100 years of quality and ingenuity." Mattresses in the Tradition Collection are covered by Kingdown with a 15-year warranty.
