Early in 2014, Naturepedic, a Chagrin Falls, Ohio, manufacturer of mattresses and bedding designed to be healthful and environmentally friendly, added a new series to Naturepedic You, their adult mattresses line. While many other new models and series (especially those from larger manufacturers) introduced at the Winter 2014 Las Vegas World Market furniture show are waiting for Spring to show up in the marketplace, the EOS (Ergonomic Organic Sleep) Series is already available online through Naturepedic and through those dealers carrying Naturepedic You.
According to Naturepedic, the EOS Series "offers an innovative, luxurious, and practical approach to mattress design. Its multi-layered zippered construction allows you to customize the layers in your mattress, swap out layers, and even change the feel of your mattress years later. You can also choose different layers for you and your sleep partner." It is this ability to swap layers and the shipping of the EOS [ee-os] mattress as layers in separate boxes which propelled this new Naturepedic to headline news in several bedding news outlets.
EOS mattresses are shipped/delivered to customers one layer per box. This makes it easier to take a mattress into an apartment or a small house with tight turns and narrow hallways and doorways. The user can set up the mattress, putting one layer at a time into the zippered quilted cover, following the instructions on the available app. Queen and King sized mattresses are split. This makes the layers easier to ship. Split-size mattresses can also be customized for individual partners.
The standard support layer for the EOS Series mattress is an 8" high innerspring of pocket coils. This coil array is either firm or plush. The key benefits cited are comformability and dampening motion transfer. Custom configurations have the option of a latex support core, either soft or medium.
The comfort layers in the EOS Series organic mattress are either latex (soft or medium) or microcoils. Microcoils are used in the latex-free models and are an option for custom configuration. Memory foam is not used because of the use of petrochemicals in its manufacture, which Naturepedic avoids. For 90 days, customers can swap comfort layers at no charge, allowing them to find the right support for them.
The zippered cover of the Naturepedic EOS Series mattress is organic cotton quilted to battings of organic cotton, organic wool, and PLA (plant-based fibers). Besides being organic, this batting is breathable and moisture-wicking, keeping the surface cool and dry. It is also naturally fire retardant, negating the need for chemical treatment. The absence of highly flammable polyurethane in the mattresses is also cited by Naturepedic as reducing the fire hazard.
Currently (2015), the EOS Series has three models: the 12" high EOS Standard, 15" EOS Pillowtop, and the 10" all-latex EOS Trilux. All three models can be configured for any comfort level from Firm to Plush.
The recommended foundations for EOS Series mattresses are the Naturepedic covered platform foundation (7" or 4" high), a European style flexible wood slat foundation, or an adjustable base (made by Reverie). There is a 90-day money back guarantee and a 20-year warranty.
One final note: The section of Naturepedic website for the EOS Organic Mattress has a very informative FAQs page.
