The Pillow-Top Gel Memory Foam Mattress is the highest model of the memory foam mattresses made by Nature's Sleep, a bedding manufacturer specializing in memory foam products. Nature's Sleep boasts that this pillowtop mattress "takes gel memory foam mattresses to the next level." This claim is based not only on the foams, but also on the cover fabric.
The cover of the Pillow-Top Gel Memory Foam Mattress, made of a blend of rayon (viscose) and polyester, is zippered to be removable for dry cleaning. The embroidered cover has an anti-skid bottom to keep the mattress and the sheets in place. It is also antibacterial and resistant to allergens. The 310 gram-weight poly-rayon material wicks moisture from the sleeping surface to keep it dry, even with a sleeper perspiring. The moisture evaporates in the breathable cover, which also cools the surface. This is added to the cooling effect of the heat-conducting gel.
The signature features of the Pillow-Top Gel Memory Foam Mattress are the pillow top and the gel memory foam. The pillow top has about 2" of Nature's Sleep gel memory foam, the same as in the comfort layer. This gel-infused memory foam provides what Nature's Sleep calls "progressive support." This means that the foam gradually yields to the sleeper's weight as it responds to body heat until it conforms to the body's curves. This supports the body evenly along the whole length, supporting less prominent areas, such as the lumbar, while taking pressure off the more prominent ones, such as shoulders and hips.
The support core consists of the same high-density polyurethane foam used in other Nature's Sleep mattresses. This undergirds the mattress and the sleepers with deep support. In combination with the gel memory foams, this gives the Pillow-Top Gel Memory Foam Mattress a medium-plush feel.
With memory foam mattresses, the type of foundation used is very important. Box springs, used for decades with innerspring mattresses, are not adequate for foam mattresses, but firm, flat surfaces are. Qualifying foundations include platform beds, slatted wood-framed boxes (such as the Nature's Sleep KD Foundation), European wood slats (when closely-spaced), and adjustable beds (Nature's Sleep sells three).
