The OrganicPedic 81 by Organic Mattresses, Inc. (OMI), introduced in 2010, is a customizable natural latex mattress. Three of the layers are divided into six sections, three on each side. On ordering an OrganicPedic 81 mattress, the customer can select the density/firmness of the latex in each of these sections, a choice among four firmness levels, thus determining the configuration of the comfort level at the surface. OMI also says that this can be adjusted later in response to changes in the user's body.

The key material in the OrganicPedic 81 mattress is natural Talalay latex, also known as 100% natural rubber. This latex is made entirely from the sap of the rubber tree, which is cultivated in tropical climates. This is a renewable, sustainable resource. Latex has several advantages over synthetic foams. First, latex is very resilient and durable. Also, it is resistant to dust mites, bacteria, mold and mildew. Being organic, this latex does not have any harmful chemicals.

Other materials are organic, such as organic cotton and untreated wool. The cotton is raised in the USA without chemical fertilizers or herbicides. The Eco-Wool is from sheep raised by small producers who follow organic herding practices (no hormones or unecessary antibiotics). The wool is cleaned with soap and water, not with chemical sanitizers. Wool, besides its comfort and temperature-regulatinf properties, is also a natural fire retardant, which negates the need for chemicals to meet federal flammability standards.

Each layer is individually enclosed in fine-thread (high thread count) organic cotton fabric. Each piece has the comfort level embroidered on it. The 3.5" comfort layer on top is "sculpted," encouraging airflow right on the sleeping surface.

OMI's European style wood slat base is the standard foundation for the OrganicPedic 81.

The OrganicPedic 81 carries a 20-year limited warranty. It is available through several retail outlets, both online and in stores.
