Paramount Sleep, A.H. Beard Brand
Since mid-2011, Paramount Sleep of Norfolk, VA, has partnered with A.H. Beard, an Australian mattress manufacturer, to produce and sell AHB mattresses in the United States. Currently, partners in the Paramount Sleep Alliance—which besides Paramount Sleep also includes Dreamline Bedding, Omaha Bedding, Biscayne Bedding and Cannon Sleep Products—make and distribute A. H. Beard mattresses.

A. H. Beard has been making mattresses in Australia since 1899, and the reputation of AHB products led Paramount Sleep to seek exclusive rights to make their mattresses for the U.S. market. Generally, mattresses by A. H. Beard feature cover fabrics of wool, silk, rayon and Belgian Damask, full outer tufting, premium foams, and the Joey Coil spring support system. Overall, mattresses by A. H. Beard are regarded as luxury models.

The Joey Coil innersprings are dual coils, 2-in-1 coil design, a feature spreading among US mattress manufacturers. The signature of these coils is the initial soft response of the taller outer coil followed by the deep support of the firmer inner coil. Each dual coil pair is wrapped individually so that it responds independently to body weight applied directly to it. Among the benefits of this design are conformity to body contours, adaptability to a wide range of body sizes and weights, and suppression of motion transfer.

According to Paramount Sleep, AHB mattresses use several layers of "premium latex and memory foam" for high quality relief of pressure points and for orthopedic quality support. Memory foam is known for its conformity, and latex is highly resilient.

As in other premium mattresses reviewed on this site, outer tufting combined with compression of padding foams and fibers stabilizes the layers, preventing shifting. This is to ensure uniform support for the long term. It also minimizes the creation of permanent body impressions. Some of the A. H. Beard mattresses have Euro tops or pillow tops, which add an extra degree of comfort.

The select fibers used in the covers of A. H. Beard mattresses have their own benefits. Wool is breathable, regulates temperature and controls moisture. Silk is strong, smooth and soft. Rayon is durable and smooth, and it also is flame retardant.

So far, I have been able to identify a few A. H. Beard models sold in this country: Newcastle, Emerald Leah, EDMOND PT, VICTORIA ET, FAIRFIELD, CANTERBURY, DAWSON, ROCKDALE, and SAMUEL ET.

A description of one of the above models, the A.H. BEARD DAWSON, illustrates how these mattresses are made. It features 800 dual pocket coils (1600 full count), a gel memory foam lumbar pad, a perforation ventilated foam Aircore, a base layer of high-density support foam, comfort layers of "soft pressure relief foam," and a combination of rayon, silk and wool in the quilted cover. Though the actual height of the mattress is not given (and the Paramount Sleep retailer in my area does not carry the A.H. Beard models), judging by the photo—comparing it with the foundation—it is about 14" to 15" high.

According to the company, "Paramount Sleep offers a limited warranty against defects in workmanship and/or materials (other than fabric or handles, if featured). This warranty extends only to the original purchaser." The warranties for A.H. Beard mattresses are not listed separately online, but PS has a chart of warranty periods corresponding to code labels on the warranty tags.
