Perfect Sleeper Essentials
Essentials is a collection within the
Perfect Sleeper collection by
Serta. Perfect Sleeper was created by
Serta cooperatively with the
National Sleep Foundation (NSF) about 75 years ago.
NSF provided input as
Serta designed mattresses to deal with five common problems with sleep. These problem issues are (1) tossing and turning, (2) lack of support (which leads to back pain), (3) too hot or too cold for sleeping, (4) disturbance by sleeping partner, and (5) mattress roll-off, roll-together, and/or sagging.
Serta provides
Guide to Sleeping Well from the
National Sleep Foundation with every
Perfect Sleeper innerspring mattress. It was written to help the reader get the best night's sleep.
The key feature of the
Serta Perfect Sleeper Essentials collection is the
Continuous Support continuous coil innerspring. According to
Serta, this
innerspring is combined with
Pressure Balancing Design to balance support and comfort. There are five key benefits the company claims for this design:
- Pressure Relieving Comfort
- Proper Back Support
- Balanced Sleeping Temperature
- Undisturbed Sleep
- Prevents Roll-off or Sag
Pressure Relieving Comfort - This combination of fluffy fiber and foam, called
Pressure Balancing Design, enhances relief of pressure points, which are caused when some parts of the body bear more than their share of the sleeper's weight. The actual materials used in this depends on the model.
Proper Back Support - This is the role of the
Continuous Support innerspring, with coils made of tempered high-gauge steel. These coils, each attached to the next, support the entire body of the sleeper.
Balanced Sleeping Temperature - The quilted tops of
Essentials mattresses contain
Serta's
Pillo-Fill, a quilting material which is breathable, allowing air to flow through, cooling the sleeping surface. The fibers in the
Pillo-Fill also wick away moisture to keep the sleepers dry, which helps keep temperatures moderate.
Undisturbed Sleep - It is motion transfer which disturbs sleep when a partner moves. The
Serta Continuous Support innerspring dampens motion transfer, minimizing partner disturbance.
Prevents Roll-off or Sag -
Serta calls its design to combat roll-off and sagging
Comfort Last. This includes a reinforced edge support system. Part of this system is a steel rod in the edge of the sleeping surface. It also includes the upper and lower perimeter rods of the innerspring.
Models - Names of models in the
Serta Perfect Sleeper Essentials collection vary from one retailer or retail group to another. For instance, one retailer has three models:
Warren,
Fairport, and
Reedley. These differ in the comfort layer, with gel memory foam in the the first, memory foam in the second, and a "comfort pad" in the third. Some of the model names at other retailers are
Woodlake,
Seabright,
Huxley, and
Winslet. Whatever the model, it comes with a choice of comfort levels -- Firm, Plush, or Pillow Top. Accordingly, heights range from 8.75 to 12 inches.
Perfect Sleeper Essentials mattresses work well with good box springs, but
Serta does not list box springs on the website now. They do list and sell their
Motion Perfect® and
Motion Custom® adjustable bases. These
adjustable beds do have several advantages, especially finding better positions for comfort and back health. But if adjustables are too expensive, you may purchase a box spring, which is available through almost all retailers.
Mattresses in the
Perfect Sleeper Essentials collection are non-flipable.

Update (2014)
On its site,
Serta lists four models in the
Perfect Sleeper Essentials collection. To find these models on the
Serta site, click the "Shop the Collection" button on the Perfect Sleeper Essentials
page. These four models are
Prestbury Super Pillow Top,
Prestbury Firm,
Prestbury Plush, and
Grenquist Firm. Retailers may have different names for
these models. For instance,
US-Mattress has
Warren for
Prestbury and
Reedley for
Grenquist, while
Wayfair uses the names
New Market and
Woodlake. Several retailers have a
Grenquist Plush model or its equivalent.
The
covers of
Perfect Sleeper Essentials mattresses are quilted with
Pillo-Fill®
polyester fibers,
FireBlocker® Fiber, and 1" of
Serta®
PillowSoft™ Foam.
The three
Prestbury models are about 12" and the
Grenquist is about 10" high. The final height is determined by the "top upholstery" (aka "comfort layers"). Each
Prestbury model has
Cool Twist™
Gel Memory Foam and a
Serta®
Insulator Pad. Other materials, depending on model, are
Serta®
Comfort XD™ Foam,
Serta®
PillowSoft™ Foam, and
Serta®
Support Foam. The
Grenquist top upholstery consists of a
Serta®
Support Pad.
All
Perfect Sleeper Essentials mattresses now come with
Serta's 10-year limited warranty. There is a a 45-day trial period, called a
Comfort Assurance Program.
Serta says, "We know that even after making a careful selection, sometimes people may need a different level of comfort."
The
Motion Perfect adjustable base is now replaced by the
Motion Perfect II as the recommended
foundation for
Perfect Sleeper Essentials mattresses.
