The 12" Beautiful - Talalay Active is the second highest in the Active Collection by Pure Talalay Latex (PTB). As with all models in this collection except the Custom Choice, Beautiful consists of three Talalay latex layers: a support core at the bottom, a pressure relief layer in the middle, and a comfort layer on top. It also has an unquilted raised-wave knit cover.
Beautiful - Talalay Active is an upgrade of the Beautiful models in the Natural Collection and All-Natural Collection by Pure Latex Bliss (the original name of Pure Talalay Bliss). This edition is slighty firmer, 8 on a scale of 10 instead of 9. Latex is used instead of polyurethane foam because first, it is basically a natural product, made from rubber tree sap. It may have a small amount of synthetic latex added for more durability. It avoids the toxicity issues associated with polyurethane foam.
The other two layers are each 3" high. The latex in the pressure layer is flexible enough to conform to a sleeper's body contours. This is what relieves pressure. It distributes support evenly to take pressure off larger parts and supporting smaller areas, such as the lumbar. It also dampens motion transfer to minimize partner disturbance. Unlike memory foam, also known for pressure relief, latex is resilient, bouncing back when the weight is taken off.
The latex in the lush comfort layer is infused with phase change materials (PCMs). According to some retailer descriptions, this is in a gel form. Called ActiveFusion Technology, this PCM latex (sold as Celsion by its manufacturer, Talalay Global, parent company of PTB) stabilizes temperatures in the mattress. This is a Goldilocks effect, keeping a sleeper not too warm, not too cool.
Besides being non-taxic, latex is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It also discourages dust mites, which carry many allergens.
The knit cover is not quilted. This allows the ActiveFusion to work more directly on the sleepers. It also keeps the cover more breathable. This works with the natural breathability of Talalay latex. This cover is zippered so it can be removed and washed.
As to foundations for the Beautiful Talalay Active mattress, box springs are out. Most other foundations are acceptable if they are sturdy enough to handle the weight of an all-latex mattress. These include platform beds, solid-top box bases, European wood slats, and adjustable beds.
